Note: The present work evokes a temperate landscape warmed by a bright and clear light, likely shaped by Claxton's extensive travels, which included stays in Australia, India, and Egypt. The artist utilises his generous application of various tones of blue in the water and sky to achieve this effect, with a sense of vitality produced by the vibrant flashes of red. Nevertheless, the scene is also imbued with an atmosphere of serenity, particularly through the flat surface of the river and the gentle movement of the steamboat.

Marshall Claxton (British, 1812-1881) Victorian Ladies in a Rowing Boat with two Pet Dogs signed lower left on the rowing boat "M Claxton 1875" oil on canvas h:30 w: 60 cm Marshall Claxton was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1812, and his work consisted predominantly of narrative scenes and portraits. When he was 17 he studied under John Jackson, RA, and in 1831 he enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy, where his first exhbited portrait was of his father. In 1834 he was awarded the first medal in the Academy's school of painting, and in 1835 his portrait of Sir Astley Cooper won him the Gold Medal of the Society of British Artists. He painted in Italy between 1837 and 1842 and then travelled to Australia in 1850 where he worked and exhibited, and visited India and Egypt before returning to England in 1858.

MARSHALL CLAXTON "Low Church", signed and dated 18(?)5, oil on canvas, 30" x 26.5" and the companion painting "High Church", 30" x 25" (2) Marshall Claxton, the son of a Wesleyan minister, was born at Bolton, Lancashire. He studied under John Jackson, RA and at the Royal Academy school, and had his first picture in the Royal Academy, a portrait of his father, the Rev. Marshal Claxton, in 1832. In subsequent years about 30 of his pictures were shown at Academy exhibitions. He was awarded the first medal in the painting school in 1834, and obtained the gold medal of the Society of Arts in 1835 for his portrait of Sir Astley Cooper.
