SALVADOR CLEMENTE Y PÉREZ (Cádiz, 1859- Madrid, 1909). Untitled, Seville. Oil on canvas. Reengineered. Signed and located in the lower left corner.

    Est: €12,000 - €15,000

SALVADOR CLEMENTE Y PÉREZ (Cádiz, 1859- Madrid, 1909). Untitled, Seville. Oil on canvas. Reengineered. Signed and located in the lower left corner. Measurements: 74 x 162 cm; 98 x 186 cm (frame). Clemente dedicated himself to the practice of costumbrismo in Seville, although according to a conception that was still precious, with clear and precise qualities and volumes. It should be noted that some contemporary testimony (or almost, from 1929, as is the book by Cascales) warns that the painter's favorite works were always the effects of light (even practicing other genres), being a notable feature in the sun backgrounds according to the praise of the press of the time. Although classified in the Sevillian school, the initial formation of Salvador Clemente took place in the School of Fine Arts of Cadiz, where he obtained several prizes in his superior classes. The School had benefited from the progressive improvement of the latter when in 1854 it was promoted to the rank of first class from the situation in which it was found by the decree of 1849, in which the Government had established Provincial Academies of Fine Arts of second class in thirteen cities, among which Cadiz: associated with the development of realism, the figure of the director, the history painter Ramón Rodríguez Barcaza (1820-1892), encouraged the teaching activity of the School, opening with his successes new perspectives to the disciples. Thus, with the achievement of a bronze medal for a still life in the local exhibition of 1879, Clemente decided to move to Paris. In the cosmopolitan capital of art at that time, he expanded his knowledge, becoming a disciple of the Spanish painter Francisco Domingo Marqués and the French master Leon Bonnat, an artist closely related to Spain, who initiated him in the path of academic naturalism. He returned to Spain and settled definitively in Seville in 1880, integrating himself in the artistic life of the city by appearing in 1887 as treasurer of the Free Academy of Fine Arts. In 1880 he returned to his country and settled in Seville, where he spent most of the rest of his life. He did not often participate in exhibitions, although when he did he won a Bronze Medal in the Regional of Cadiz in 1879 for a still life entitled Flowers and Fruits. He achieved his greatest successes in genre painting and, especially, in popular customs, which he treated with exquisite detail and careful light effects. Good examples of this are the paintings "La feria de pájaros en la Alfalfa de Sevilla", which he presented to a contest organized by the newspaper "El Porvenir" in 1882; La tarde, which was acquired by the president of Uruguay Julián Herrera; "Los naranjales", "Niños cuidando pavos" and, above all, "Volverán las oscuras golondrinas", dated 1882, and which was undoubtedly the work that brought him the greatest popularity. Clemente tried his luck in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts on only one occasion, in 1897, obtaining one of the honorable mentions for the only work he presented, "Para el mercado" (For the market). Today his work is divided in different private collections and relevant centers of artistic interest, such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga.

  • SALVADOR CLEMENTE Y PÉREZ (Cádiz, 1859- Madrid, 1909). "House of the Albaicín". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

SALVADOR CLEMENTE Y PÉREZ (Cádiz, 1859- Madrid, 1909). "House of the Albaicín". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner.

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

SALVADOR CLEMENTE Y PÉREZ (Cádiz, 1859- Madrid, 1909). "House of the Albaicín". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 82 x 49 cm; 96 x 61,5 cm (frame). Clemente was dedicated to practice the costumbrismo in Andalusia according to a conception still preciosista, of qualities and clear volumes. It should be noted how some contemporary testimony (or almost, from 1929, as is the book of Cascales) warns that the favorite works of the painter were always the effects of light (even practicing other genres), being a notability in the sun backgrounds according to the praise of the press of the time. Salvador Clemente began his academic training at the School of Fine Arts in Cadiz. After making several trips, in 1880 he moved to Seville, where seven years later he began to work as treasurer of the Academia Libre de Bellas Artes and where he also established his painter's workshop, where he taught classes. He also worked as an illustrator, making drawings for different publications such as the book by Manuel Cano y Cueto, "El hombre de piedra" (with a prologue by Siro García del Mazo and drawings by Salvador Clemente, Madrid, 1889). His painting is inscribed within the current of costumbrismo, with a certain technical character, of a preciosist style where a great interest in light and the effects it produces on the whole composition can be appreciated. In 1897 he presented a single painting at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, being awarded an honorable mention. Today his work is divided in different private collections and relevant centers of artistic interest, such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Malaga.
