Clementschitsch provenance: Josef Urban estate; Private collection Vienna; gallery Kovacek and Zetter 2009; International private collection ESTIMATE °€ 30.000 - 50.000 STARTING PRICE °€ 30.000 The career of the Austrian landscape and genre painter Arnold Jacob Clementschitsch began painting when he was a small child and drew a man with a dog in a landscape painting by Ludwig Canziani in his parents' house. Clementschitsch attended the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt and studied there with Hubert Landa and Erwin Puchinger. He moved to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, in 1910 to the School of Applied Arts at Stubenring in Vienna and in 1911 to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Meetings with Carinthian artists, with Herbert Boeckl in 1924, who significantly stimulated Clementschitsch's nude painting, with the distinguished lyrical landscape painter Felix Esterl in the late twenties, provided the human and artistic ties to the painting of the country. Preferred portraitist of many Carinthian families. In Vienna, he had already attracted attention with his original street paintings at his first collective exhibition in 1920 at the Secession. This was followed by exhibitions in Barcelona (1928), Venice (1932) and Vienna (1953). Along with Wilhelm Thöny, he can be counted as the only Austrian representative of the Blaue Reiter. Awards: 1937 honorary citizen of the city of Villach; 1947 professor title. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The colors are clearly dominated by shades of blue, reinforcing the crisp atmosphere. Along with the loose brushwork, the Austrian artist has created a very harmonious composition. Arnold Jacob Clemenschitsch was born in Villach in Carinthia, Austria. He first studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna, under Hubert Landa and Erwin Puchinger. Subsequently, he attended the Vienna Academy and the Vienna School of Applied Arts. At the Munich Academy, he also took courses in writing and book design. He developed his own painting style of images determined by color and a lyrical mood during the 1920s. Clemenschitsch was a member of the Art Association of Carinthia and received the Austrian State Prize for Fine Arts in 1963. His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. Provenance: Private property, Carinthia/Vienna - acquired directly from the artist. Streetlife scenes used to be an early field for Arnold Clementschitsch to experiment with different formal problems. He skillfully employed the possibilities of Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Symbolism, and Cubism to translate reality into art. Aspects of painting and narrative overlapped. From 1917 to 1924, i. e., during seven years that marked a significant artistic development, streetlife used to be a central subject unfolding a rich diversity of expression which the artist was never to achieve again in his future career. He understood how to adopt programmatic inspirations without denying his personal concern as an artist and never explored a terrain where he could not find a firm foothold. He quenched his 'wild thirst for reality', to employ a saying by Utrillo, only with beverages that were wholesome to him so that we never have the feeling that he experimented with methods he could not cope with. In line with the allegorical aspect of his art, his own experience is turned into general symbolism, and his distinct clarity in outline and colour never speculates with blurred mystical effects.
