19TH C FRENCH BARBEDIENNE BRONZE "THE FATES"

A superb quality large mid 19th century Barbedienne bronze figure of "The Fates" by Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clesinger (1814-1883) supported by an green onyx base. Measures 20"x11"x6". Weight 29 lbs. No screws but can be attached to base if desired. This bronze depicts Aprodite (Goddess of love and beauty) lying down holding a scroll . Alongside her is Artemis (Goddess of the hunt, the moon and archery) holding a spindle. This figure is based on the Ancient Greek sculpture of 'The Fates' by Phidias (480-430BC) and belongs to the Parthenon in Greece, Phidias is generally acknowledged as the greatest Ancient Greek sculptor. Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clesinger was a French sculptor and painter in 19th century and was awarded various honours and awards for his works. This bronze was cast by the famous Parisian foundry F. Barbedienne, founded in 1838, and bears their signature and also the Collas reduction stamp. The Barbedienne foundry was set up in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas, Collas invented a machine to create smaller bronze figures from statues of Greek & Roman origin in particular, of which this bronze is an example of. This foundry produced many fine pieces over the years and worked closely with many artists. This bronze is in excellent original condition and can go straight into a home or collection

JEAN-BAPTISTE AUGUSTE CLÉSINGER (France, 1814 - 1883). "Naked Huntress". Rome, 1860. Sculpture in patinated bronze. Signed by the author and with seal of Barbedienne foundry. Measurements: 39 x 18 x 31 cm. Sculpture in bronze, work of Jean-Baptiste Clésinger, inspired by the goddess of the hunt, Artemis or Diana, whom he represents however naked, a value opposed to the púdica condition of the Greco-Roman divinity. Mainly a sculptor, although he also cultivated painting, Jean-Baptiste Clésinger, called Auguste, began his training with his father, the sculptor Georges-Philippe Clésinger, who taught at the School of Fine Arts in Bensaçon. He was also a disciple of Bertel Thorwaldsen, although his language is framed rather in romanticism, soon moving away from the neoclassical models of this master. Clésinger began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1843, debuting with a bust portrait of Viscount Jules de Valdahon. He regularly showed his works at this Salon until 1864, and in the 1847 edition he caused a scandal for the sensuality of his distinctly romantic work, "Woman Bitten by a Snake", for which he based himself on the study of a real model, Apollonie Sabatier, who was Clésinger's lover and also Baudelaire's. Only two years later, in 1849, he was named Knight of the French Legion of Honor, becoming an officer in 1864. He stood out as a portrait painter, representing prominent figures of the time such as the actress Rachel Félix or Théophile Gautier. Of special importance is his statue of Louise of Savoy in the series "Queens of France and illustrious women" of the Luxembourg Garden in Paris. Also noteworthy is his funerary monument for Chopin's tomb, made in 1850. In 1864 Clésinguer joined the Société Générale de Photosculpture de France, of which he would become artistic director three years later, and in fact he would be one of the main advocates of this new technique, which applied industrial progress to sculptural production. Clésinger's works are currently preserved in the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée de la Vie Romantique and the Petit Palais in Paris, the Musée de la Picardie in Amiens and other public and private collections.

Garniture de cheminée en marbre et bronze. 19e siècle Se composant d'une pendule en marbre noir et bronze doré sommée d'une sculpture en bronze représentant une joueuse de lyre signée J. Clésinger. Flanquée de deux candélabres au motif de caryatides en bronze à deux patines à six bras de lumière sommées d'une cigogne posée sur une tortue signés Barbedienne et cachet 'Réduction mécanique Colas'. An exceptional antique French patinated bronze realistic bust of Jesus Christ, 1858, modeled by Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clesinger, French, 1814 to 1883. Signed: J CLESINGER. Rome. 1858 under the left shoulder, F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR verso, and features the Reduction Mecanique seal. Jean Baptiste Clesinger, known as Auguste, was born in Besancon in 1814, son of George Philippe, sculptor and stone mason. A pupil of his fathers, he showed for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1843 with a bust of Viscount Jules de Valdahon. His father had taken him to Rome in 1832 and he worked in Bertel Thorvaldsens studio for a while. Upon his return to Paris he worked with David dAngers maintaining a studio in Rome at the same time. Classic European Bronze Sculpture For Collectors.

JEAN-BAPTISTE AUGUSTE CLÉSINGER (Besançon, 22 October 1814 - Paris, 6 January 1883); Rome, 1860. "Mithra". Blued bronze. Founder; Barbedienne. Size: 35 x 16 x 13 cm. Mainly a sculptor, but also a painter, Jean-Baptiste Clésinger, known as Auguste, began his training with his father, the sculptor Georges-Philippe Clésinger, who taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bensaçon. He was also a pupil of Bertel Thorwaldsen, although his language is more Romantic, and he soon moved away from the neoclassical models of this master. Clésinger began to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1843, making his debut with a bust portrait of Viscount Jules de Valdahon. He regularly exhibited his works at this Salon until 1864, and in the 1847 edition he caused a scandal with the sensuality of his clearly Romantic work "Woman Bitten by a Snake", for which he based himself on the study of a real model, Apollonie Sabatier, who was Clésinger's lover and also Baudelaire's. Only two years later, in 1849, he was appointed Knight of the French Legion of Honour, becoming an officer in 1864. He excelled as a portrait painter, depicting prominent figures of the time such as the actress Rachel Félix and Théophile Gautier. Of particular importance is his statue of Louise of Savoy in the series "Queens of France and Illustrious Women" in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. Also noteworthy is his funerary monument for Chopin's tomb, executed in 1850. In 1864 Clésinguer joined the Société Générale de Photo-sculpture de France, of which he became artistic director three years later, and was in fact one of the main advocates of this new technique, which applied industrial progress to sculptural production. Works by Clésinger are now in the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée de la Vie Romantique and the Petit Palais in Paris, the Musée de la Picardie in Amiens and other public and private collections.
