  • Graham Barry Clilverd,  Blackburn Skua taking off, 1941
    Nov. 27, 2024

Graham Barry Clilverd,  Blackburn Skua taking off, 1941

    Est: £300 - £500

Graham Barry Clilverd,  British 1883-1959 -  Blackburn Skua taking off, 1941;  pastel on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Graham Clilverd 1941',  32.8 x 49.7 cm: together with another work on paper by the same artist, 'Trinity House 'Buoy Store' at Blackwall on the northern banks of the Thames' (2) (ARR)  Note:  In the Great War, Clilverd, a graduate of the Central School of Art, was commissioned as an officer in the London Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery but was eventually able to put his considerable drawing skills to good use in the Royal Engineers' Camouflage Section. He was a first rate architectural draughtsman, who would later become widely known for his etchings of London and Italy, and his pictures have a modeller's attention to detail. Depicted in the 2nd work from the lot is the Trinity House Buoy Store at Blackwall (opposite what is now the O2). What are shown are various types of navigational marker buoys, the different shapes (conical and spherical) having different meanings. The red painted buoys mark the port hand of a navigable channel and the green painted ones mark the starboard hand. The vessel in the background is a Trinity House lights and buoy tender.
