After CLAUDE MICHEL CLODION (Nancy, 1738 - Paris, 1814); c. 1900. "Bacchanal". Patinated bronze and marble pedestal. Signed "Clodion". Measurements: 43 x 26 x 19 cm. In this sculptural group the author approaches one of his favorite themes, that of the bacchanals or sacred festivities dedicated to the god Bacchus. It is starred by bacchantes, major satyrs and a child satyr, a figure also typical of Bacchic iconography. It is a dynamic image, with an ascending helicoidal movement, in the manner of Bernini's baroque works. Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was born in Nancy, but in 1755 he moved to Paris to study in the workshop of his uncle, the sculptor Lambert Sigisbert Adam, with whom he remained for four years. After his death, he became a disciple of Jean Baptiste Pigalle, Madame de Pompadour's favorite sculptor. Soon his work began to be recognized, and in 1759 he won the grand prize for sculpture at the Académie Royale. In 1761 he was awarded the first silver medal for studies on models, and a year later he obtained the Grand Prix of the Royal Academy, consisting of a pension to extend his training in Italy. In Rome Clodion developed an intense activity between 1767 and 1771. Back in Paris he established his own workshop, where he worked with his brothers representing mythological scenes, groups of dancers, nymphs and bathers, in a language somewhere between Rococo and Neoclassicism. His works were in great demand, from the Parisian salons to Catherine II of Russia. Clodion's works are preserved in the Louvre (Paris), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), the Art Institute of Chicago, the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), the Frick Collection (New York) and the Kimbell Museum (Forth Worth, Texas), among many others.

                    Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Clodion, Claude (French, 1738-1814) Patinated Bronze Statue, nude woman embracing bust of Satyr or Bacchus, signed. Clodion, whose career spanned the last decades of the ancien régime through the French Revolution and Napoleon's reign, embraced his era's taste for antiquity. Sometimes this preference is more apparent in his choice of theme than in his style. While often Neoclassical, his manner at times remained quite Rococo, as in the present example. Although Clodion received a number of important commissions for monumental marble sculptures, his fame and popularity rested on his skill at modeling small-scale terracotta groups for private collectors. The seeming spontaneity of this composition, a rapturous embrace, in which it appears that the senses are totally abandoned, was achieved only after much meditation. This work is one of the most minutely studied of all the Bacchic orgies that were Clodion's specialty. Clodion's work was steeped in the imagery of Greek and Roman art, but the deliciously charged rhythms seen here are entirely his own. He made such works for connoisseurs during his stay in Rome from 1762 to 1771, but this group is so highly evolved that it may date to the 1780s. Weight:9lbs. Measurements: Approx. 14" Height Condition: Great condition, Light signs of display wear, surface marks. Domestic Shipping: $60
