        Gerald Coarding (1911-1986). 1955. Oil on canvas, size 92 x 74 cm (36 1/4 x 29 1/4 inches), frame dimensions 95 x 77 cm (37 1/3 x 30 1/3 inches). Signed and dated upper right. On the reverse is an unfinished artwork of an earlier painting by the artist. Provenance: This painting is endorsed by the Gerald Coarding Foundation and will be included in a future catalog of the artist's rezone. (Gerald D. Coarding was born on June 5, 1911 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He fought in World War II in Europe and lived afterwards some years in Paris Coarding studied with Hans Hoffman in New York and with Fernand Leger in Paris, and he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His work was also exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. He worked for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York at 80 Pine Street. David Rockefeller, President of the Bank, purchased one or two of the panels of a triptych painting, The Plainsman, (1956) by Coarding. The selection committee included Alfred Barr, Dorothy Miller, James Sweeney, Perry Rathbone, and Robert Hale. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1947 and the Whitney in 1955 (The Warrior). In 1985, he exhibited with Louis Stone at the Noyes Museum of Art, Oceanville, New Jersey. (See "Images in Art: Paintings by Two Rediscovered New Jersey Modernists, Gerald Coarding and Louis Stone.") Around this time, he also exhibited in the Janet Fleisher Gallery in Philadelphia. He died in Dorothy, NJ in March of 1986.)
