Edmund C. Coates Art for Sale at Auction

Painter, Landscape painter, Historical-scenes painter, b. 1816 - d. 1871

Edmund Coates was born in England, but lived in the United States, in New York City throughout his most productive period as an artist (1837-1872). He is listed in both Brooklyn and New York City directories as Edward, Edmund, E.C. Coates and E.G. Coates. These discrepancies are not unusual for nineteenth century directories. Coates exhibited as E.C. Coates in the Apollo Gallery and Association in 1839-40 and in the National Academy of Design in 1841. He is identified as a landscape, portrait, marine and history painter most closely allied to the Hudson River School of painters, producing landscapes also on the Connecticut River. Additionally, he is known for making landscapes of Canada, Italy and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It is not known if his Italian paintings were based on travel abroad or if they were studio productions. Biographical notes and references for Coates are in the New-York Historical Society’s Dictionary of Artists in America/ 1564-1860 by George C. Groce and David H. Wallace, Yale University Press, 1957, p. 133. Paintings by Coates are in the Metropolitan Museum, The New York Historical Society, Addison Gallery of American Art, Shelburne Museum and Yale University Art Gallery.
