On Louis XIV's Death Bed he said "I Loved War Too Much" - This Map is the one of the Proofs. The Battle of Arras, fought on August 25, 1654, was a victory of a French army under Turenne against a Spanish army commanded by Don Ferdinand de Salis and the Prince de Conde. Including portraits of Louis XIV, Marie de Medicis, Cardinal Mazarin, Monsieur de Turenne, Marechal de la Ferte- Senneterre, and Duc d' Anjou.     Begräbnisfeierlichkeiten der Dauphine Maria Theresa Rafaela von Spanien. Radierung und Grabstichel. 50,1 x 33,3 cm. 1748. IFF 204, Jombert 158. Wz. Dupuy Fin/Auvergne 1742 (Heawood 3303). Das Begräbnis der bei der Geburt der ersten Tochter jung verstorbenen Maria Theresa Rafaela von Spanien, der Frau des Kronprinzen Ludwig Ferdinand, wurde mit aufwendigen Feierlichkeiten begangen. Die prunkvolle ephemere Festarchitektur und Dekoration der Künstlerbrüder Slodtz verwandelt das Mittelschiff der Pariser Kathedrale Notre-Dame in eine pompöse Rokokoszenerie. Unter dem zentralen Baldachin betrauern zwei allegorische weibliche Figuren die Urne der Kronprinzessin. Zeitgenossen kritisierten die federführenden Brüder Slodtz für den festlich-profanen Charakter ihrer Gestaltung, auch wenn dies dem Geschmack des Hofes entsprach, so Cochin in seinen Memoiren (zit. unter IFF 203). Der Zeichner, Kupferstecher und Schriftsteller Charles Nicolas Cochin der Jüngere begann seine Karriere mit der zeichnerischen und druckgraphischen Dokumentation der höfischen Zeremonien Ludwigs XV. Teils zeichnete und radierte er selbst, teils führte sein Vater, Charles Nicolas der Ältere, die Platten nach den Vorlagen des früh berühmt gewordenen Sohnes aus. Cochin bereiste auf Veranlassung der ihn fördernden Madame Pompadour 1749-51 Italien und veröffentlichte Schriften über die antike und italienische Kunst. Umfangreiche Buchillustrationen und Porträtaufträge sowie weitere kunstgeschichtliche Schriften gehören zum Werk des talentierten und vielbeschäftigten Künstlers, der 1751 als erstes und einziges Mitglied ohne jegliche Formalitäten in die Akademie aufgenommen wurde und mehrere höfische Ämter sowie den Adelstitel erhielt. Das prunkvoll inszenierte Blatt zeigt die Feierlichkeiten im Theater von Schloss Versailles anläßlich der Hochzeit von Louis, Dauphin von Frankreich, mit Marie Thérèse Raphaelle, Infantin von Spanien, im Jahre 1745. Die kulturhistorisch interessante, erzählerisch detailreiche und zeichnerisch meisterhafte Radierung liegt hier in einem ausgezeichneten Druck mit gleichmäßigem Rand um die Plattenkante vor. Das verfeinerte Kolorit ist vorzüglich erhalten. Geringfügig angestaubt im Rand, minimale Erhaltungsmängel, sonst ausgezeichnetes Exemplar.
