11 hand-illuminated engravings Belonging to the work “La Magnifique et sumptueuse pompe funebre faite aux obseques, et funerailles, du tres grande et tres victorieus empereur Charles Cinquieme celebrated in Brussels.” Designed by Hieronymus Cock and engraved by the Doetecum brothers. The engravings identify the characters who participated in the funeral ceremony of Emperor Charles on December 30, 1559, including King Philip II. This is a first edition since the last print is signed "HIERONIMUS CONCK INVE" with a line above the E; in the second state the word “INVE” disappears; In the third state the word “inventor” appears next to Cock; and in the fourth state the entire indication disappears. This is recorded by Lydia de Pauw-De Ween, in the catalog raisonne of Hieronimus Cock: “Jerôme Cock editeur d'estampes et graveur 1507?-1570”, Brussels, 1970. This lot is made up of 11 hand-illuminated engravings framed together in three. The series is incomplete. Recently restored and with homogenized color. Mense Maio, Anno M.D.LI. Cum caesa privilegio ad VIII an. Cock journeyed to Rome between 1546-8 intending to study antique sculpture, but became fascinated with the Palatine monuments, mounting expeditions to the Colosseum and the Baths of Diocletian. The drawings for several prints, survives a.o. now in Edinburgh, and were likely executed by Cock on the spot. As the other etchings from this early series, it was etched by Cock himself in the first years after his return from Rome in 1548. As a publisher, Cock would have been well aware of the potential for ruins to appeal to collectors of art as well as those interested in Rome. The series were important and came to exert a lasting influence on landscape painting from mid-century, informing the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Veronese.(description credit to: Christopher P. The Renaissance in Print, Brüssel 2013, Kat.-Nr. 46, mit Abb. -- -- Das sehr seltene Blatt datiert aus der Frühzeit von Hieronymus Cocks Tätigkeit als Radierer und Verleger. Die Radierung ist wohl das früheste Beispiel von der fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit zwischen Cock und Pieter Bruegel. Denn die Landschaftskomposition geht zurück auf eine von Bruegel um 1554 ausgeführte Zeichnung "Landschaft mit fünf Bären", die heute in der Národní Galerie in Prag verwahrt wird. Das Märtyrium der hl. Katharina (Himmel und Hölle). Kupferstich nach Giulio Romano. 43 x 31,2 cm. "H. Cock Xcu. 1565". Riggs 105, Sellink/Leesberg (Galle, New Hollstein) R11 I (von II). Wz. Krüglein. Vor der Veränderung des Datums in 1562. Riggs ordenete das Blatt aus stilistischen Gründen Philipps Galle zu, der New Hollsein weist diese Zuschreibung zurück und suggeriert Jan Collaert als möglichen Kupferstecher. Eine (ehemals) Diana Scultori zugewiesene gegenseitige Wiederholung ist ebenfalls bekannt (B. 27) und nennt Giulio Romano als Urheber der Darstellung, eben wie auch auf unserem Stich "Julio de Mantua". - Ausgezeichneter, samtener Abzug mit teils sehr feinem Rändchen um die Einfassungslinie. Etwas fleckig, einige Randläsuren und - bestoßungen, oben und unten je ein Randeinriss, beriebene Stelle mittig am Rad, zwei kleine Wurmlöchlein, verso geglättete Mittelfalte, weitere geringe Erhaltungsmängel, teils ausgebessert, sonst jedoch insgesamt gut.
