Codazzi, Niccolò (Naples 1642-1693 Genoa, Baroque veduta painter) (Naples 1642-1693 Genoa, Baroque veduta painter) attributed to,

      Est: -

Codazzi, Niccolò (Naples 1642-1693 Genoa, Baroque veduta painter) (Naples 1642-1693 Genoa, Baroque veduta painter) attributed to, "Architectural Capriccio with Testament Scene: The Blind Beggar of Jericho", oil on canvas, mounted, 95.5 x 71.5 cm. An imposing ruin-like architecture extends from the foreground into the background, curving in a semicircle. The colonnade is supported by five columns with Corinthian capitals. The implied oriels in the colonnade are almost completely ruined. The fact that this must have originally been a monumental building is indicated by the plinths above the upper cornice and the monumental wall projecting beyond the edge of the picture. The capriccio is enlivened by the Old Testament scene "The Blind Beggar of Jericho". The figural staffages in Codazzi's works were mostly executed by other artists. Vegetation and a lake or river are indicated in the background. Niccolò Codazzi, son of the painter Viviano Codazzi, was born in Naples in 1642. He received his artistic training from his father, whose style he adopted. After working in Rome and Aix-en-Provence, Niccolò worked in Paris and was accepted at the Académie Royal with the help of Charles Lebrun. After returning to Italy, he settled in Genoa and worked for the Brignole in Palazzo Rosso.

Niccolò Codazzi Jacob de Heusch, Capriccio View of the Temple of Minerva Medica

      Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Niccolò Codazzi specialized in depictions of architecture and ruins. The subject matter and style of his paintings show the growing popularity of Classical Rome with collectors in the 17th century. Niccolò trained in his father's workshop and it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the two artists' hands. The present painting depicts the Temple of Minerva Medica, an octagonal building dating from the 4th century B.C., which is a reoccurring motif in Codazzi´s repertoire. Developing exceptional mastery of perspective, shading and the skillful use of shadows, he was able to enhance the rhythm and space of his compositions. As is the case in this image, he often only painted the architecture, leaving the figures to be added by different artists. Close comparisons can be made with two other works of the same subject - one whereabouts unknown, the other at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, inv. E 260, M 6633 (see: D. R. Marshall, Viviano and Niccolo Codazzi and the Baroque architectural fantasy, Milano and Roma, Jandi Sapi, 1993, cat. NC 32 and 33, pp.372,375). We would like to thank Professor Marshall for kindly endorsing the present attribution to Niccolò Codazzi, in collaboration with Jacob de Heusch, upon examination of a photograph.
