Franz Codin known as Francesco Codino (Frankfurt, 1590 - Milan, after 1631). Still life of shellfish. 71X86, oil paint on canvas. "This still life on two layers, disorganized, without a decorative arrangement but also with objects placed in an essential way seems to have an illustrative and educational character. The accurate definition of the physiological particular has an almost scientific character and may have been composed to be used to to obtain incisions school character. often Codin repeated parts of his compositions in other paintings that he was making, mixing them with other genres, deconstructing and structuring, inserted in some paintings, details of other pieces. This process was often adopted by several painters of the seventeenth century. in fact in our work some specimens such as crab, shrimp ect. often appear in his other compositions, so we can state that the attribution is probably certain. Moreover, even the palette is reflected in other paintings. the representational partition simple and archaic, in a manner apparent random mind, however succeeds tidy and pleasant, for coloristic not very varied but in keeping with the colors in the approach technically well arranged. Codin after an apprenticeship at the workshop of Daniel and Peter Soreau Binoit, moved to Lombardy, where he got to know Panfilo Nuvolone (Cremona, 1581 - Milan, 1651), his contemporary, and as he said spreading the kind of nature death.

Francesco Codino, attributed to, Still Life with Fruit, Nuts, and a Throttle

      Est: €15,000 - €20,000

This still life was first published by Dr. Nicosetta Roio. It can be stylistically grouped together with a number of works attributed to the North Italian painter Francesco Codini and dated to between 1612 and 1631. Prof. Dr. Gerhard Bott was able to identify this artist as being identical with the German Franz Godin. The similarity of the names and artistic style give a relatively clear indication that Codini and Godin were in fact the same person.Francesco Codino often painted from a lowered viewpoint, as in the present work, and his paintings were generally still lifes representing the same objects but in differing arrangements. The porcelain bowl with the moulded rim, the cherries, and the walnuts are to be found in many of his other compositions. The panel upon which this work is painted has been cut vertical to the grain of the wood as opposed to horizontally, and thus the rings of the tree are visible from the centre of the piece to the edges. We would like to thank Prof. Alberto Cottino for his attribution of this work to Francesco Codino upon examination of high resolution photographs.

FRANCESCO CODINO (also known as Franz Godin) (Italian, active circa 1615-1635)

      Est: $30,000 - $40,000

FRANCESCO CODINO (also known as Franz Godin) (Italian, active circa 1615-1635) A pair of still lifes with flowers, birds, and fruit, circa 1620s Oil on panel 15 x 21 inches (each) PROVENANCE: Newhouse Galleries, New York (as Paul Liegeois); Mr. and Mrs. F. Howard Walsh, Fort Worth, Texas; Walsh Family Art Trust This pair of paintings can be attributed to Francesco Codino (also called Franz Godin) who may have been born in the Southern Netherlands around 1590, and was active both in Hanau/Frankfurt and Lombardy. In 1619, he trained in the atelier of Daniel Soreau in Hanau, and by 1621 is recorded in Italy where he probably died. Codino painted several variants of the present composition containing the bowl of fruit, although the composition with the basket appears to be unique. Neither of the present works is listed in Codino's oeuvre catalogue by Gerhard Bott, Ein Stück von allerlei Blumenwerk - ein Stück von Früchten - zwei Stück auf Tuch mit Hecht. Die Stillebenmaler Soreau, Binoit, Codino und Marrell in Hanau und Frankfurt 1600-1650, Hanau, 2001, nor in the chapter on the artist (as Godin) in Gianluca e Ulisse Bocchi (ed.) Naturaliter. Nuovi contributi alla natura morta in Italia settentrionale e Toscana tra XVII e XVIII secolo, Casalmaggiore, 1998. Bott lists eight versions of the bowl composition, his WV.C. (Werkverzeichnis Codino) 9 - W.V.C. 16, including examples dated 1621, 1622, 1623 and 16(31). This pair of paintings represents a new addition to Codino's known oeuvre. We are grateful to Mr. Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for attributing these still life paintings to Codino, and for his kind assistance in cataloguing this lot.

FRANZ GODIN, CALLED FRANCESCO CODINO ACTIVE IN LOMBARDY IN 1621 STILL LIFE OF SWEETMEATS ON A GILT TAZZA, A LEMON, A PEWTER PLATE WITH OLIVES, CAPERS AND A LEMON, A ROEMER, A BREAD-ROLL, SHRIMPS AND A CRAB, TOGETHER WITH A MOUSE, ALL UPON A TABLE-TOP measurements note 38.5 by 54.3 cm.; 15 1/8 by 21 3/8 in. oil on panel PROVENANCE Anonymous sale, Rome, Christie's, 18 June 2002, lot 754, where acquired by the present owner. NOTE The artistic personality of Francesco Codino, by whom less than thirty works are known, was first established by S. Bottari (Nature morte della scuola di Francoforte, 1964) who noted the stylistic affinities between Codino's still lifes and those of his northern contemporaries. Dr. Gerhard Bott, a copy of whose expertise accompanies this lot (dated 24 April 2003), has suggested that he trained in the studio of Daniel Soreau in Hanau and that of Peter Binoit in Cologne, before emigrating to northern Italy in circa 1620. To support this theory is the fact that the present composition derives from Peter Binoit's signed painting in the Galleria Sabaudia, Turin, though with minor adjustments (see G. Bott, Die Stillebenmaler Soreau, Binoit, Codino und Marrell in Hanau und Frankfurt 1600-1650, Hanau 2001, p. 210, cat. no. WV.B.44, reproduced). Codino is known to have painted this composition in at least five other variants, only one of which is signed with monogram (all reproduced in Bott, op. cit., pp. 214-5, cat. nos. WV.C.4-8). Painting versions seems to have been part of Codino's working practice, probably to meet the growing demand for his works: his Still life of grapes with a dead bird exists in three versions and his Still life of fruit in a porcelain bowl, dead birds and a vase of flowers in at least eight (ibid., p. 213, cat. nos. WV.C.1-3 and pp. 215-8, cat. nos. WV.C.9-16 respectively, all reproduced).
