Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, wields a sword in one hand and a laurel frond in the other in this beautifully elegant WWI poster. The powerful imagery is meant to convey the triumphant winning of the war, which can only happen if the viewer buys war savings stamps. We are told that buying these stamps will help "save for your country, save for yourself". America's involvement in WWI was largely unanticipated, and quite expensive. The U.S. Government began soliciting bonds that everyday Americans could deposit to the cause, to be paid back by the government when the war ended with interest applied. This influx of cash flow allowed the US to buy tanks, feed soldiers, and essentially finance the path to victory. William Haskell Coffin (1878-1941) was an American painter and illustrator most well-known for his work in literary magazines such as Harper's and The Saturday Evening Post. Coffin was one of the most highly paid illustrators of his time, and his style pulled from the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This is an Original Vintage Poster, not a reproduction. It has been archivally backed onto linen and is in excellent condition. We fully guarantee the authenticity of our items.

ARTIST: HASKELL COFFIN (1878-1941) SIZE: 20 x 29 7/8 in./51 x 75.8 cm PRINTER: Rusling Wood Litho., New York DESCRIPTION: “The rationale most often offered [for the War Savings Stamps campaign] was that no contribution to the war effort was too small, that even collected in nickels and quarters the money could be used by the government to hire workers and purchase raw materials that would help win the war... Committees, or War-Savings Societies, were set up all over the country to sell Savings stamps, which were in effect small-denomination securities available in stores, hotels, theaters, and even in booths set up on the sidewalks... By means of inventive campaigning, the government was able to bring in more than a billion dollars through the sale of Thrift and War Savings Stamps” (Rawls, p. 219-222). And while the economic realities of the initiative were unquestionably shrewd—that no amount is too small an amount when it comes to funding a just cause—it certainly couldn’t have hurt that this particular angelic embodiment of certain victory is drop-dead sexy: an alabaster-skinned, scarcely draped vision guaranteed to make every red-blooded American male dig deep. ARTIST: WILLIAM HASKELL COFFIN (1878-1941) SIZE: 20 x 29 7/8 in./50.6 x 75.8 cm PRINTER: United States Printing, New York DESCRIPTION: “Halfway through 1918, while the quickly trained American doughboy was displaying his mettle at Château-Thierry and Belleau Wood, the costs of conducting the war were mounting so rapidly that it was necessary to find substantial new sources for money. In late July, a concerted drive to raise money through sales of War Savings stamps was officially launched. [The] War Savings movement was not designed simply to raise money for waging war. Its true purpose was... an attempt at remedying domestic problems that arose from rapid conversion to an all-out war economy. Initially this campaign might have seemed a way to make even young boys and girls feel a part of the War Loan Organization—given the low cost of its twenty-five cent Thrift Stamp. But there was also the Haskell Coffin poster 'Joan of Arc Saved France,’ which exhorted ‘Women of America, Save Your Country'“ (Rawls, p. 215). This powerful design posits that everyday American women can embody the prowess and magnitude of Joan of Arc with the simple act of buying war stamps. This is the smaller format. War Savings Stamps / Share in the Victory. 1918.

          Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: HASKELL COFFIN (1878-1941) SIZE: 20 1/8 x 29 3/4 in./51 x 75.6 cm PRINTER: Rusling Wood Litho., New York DESCRIPTION: “The rationale most often offered [for the War Savings Stamps campaign] was that no contribution to the war effort was too small, that even collected in nickels and quarters the money could be used by the government to hire workers and purchase raw materials that would help win the war...
