        Jaguarita / F. Halevy. 1855

        Est: $1,200 - $1,500

Artist: VICTOR COINDRE Size: 20 3/4 x 27 in./52.7 x 68.6 cm Lith. Bertauts, Paris We are in the jungles of Dutch Guyana in 1772. Jaguarita, the queen of her tribe, has been taken prisoner by the Dutch – but then falls in love with Maurice, a soldier who guards her cell. When they escape, Jaguarita gets her tribesmen drunk to foil their attack on the Dutch settlement. This is Jaguarita l'Indienne, a three-act opéra comique that debuted at the Theätre Lyrique in 1855. This lush poster, exceptionally detailed for the mid-19th century, captures a moment of extreme tension in which Maurice swears his fealty to Jaguarita as her Guyanan tribesmen creep up behind him, a knife drawn.
