CHARLES COINER (1898-1989) NRA MEMBER / WE DO OUR PART. Circa 1933. 26 1/4x20 1/4 inches, 66 1/2x51 1/2 cm. Condition B: overpainting along repaired tears and creases at edges, in image and along vertical and horizontal folds; colors attenuated. Framed. Coiner learned his craft during a six-year stint at an advertising agency in Chicago. In 1924, he moved to Philadelphia, where he joined the art department at N.W. Ayer. Coiner gained national recognition with the logo he designed for the NIRA, The National Industrial Recovery Act. He became a key figure in the modern approach to advertising during the late-1930s while working with the Container Corporation of America campaigns, for which he was allowed to hire all of the avant-garde talents that he wanted. Coiner's "Blue Eagle" became a ubiquitous sight in New Deal America, as it was displayed coast-to-coast by businesses. It has since become an icon of American Modernism. Enacted in 1933, the National Industrial Recovery Act was a New Deal public works program intended to provide an economic stimulus.

The Office of Civilian Defense was set up by President Franklin Roosevelt on May 20, 1941, although Coiner is credited with having designed the logo in 1939. In 1924, he moved to Philadelphia, where he joined the art department at N.W. Ayer. He was a young, dashing figure in the advertising world and he gained national recognition with the logo he designed for the NIRA, The National Industrial Recovery Act. He became a key figure in the modern approach to advertising during the late-1930s while working with the Container Corporation of America campaigns, for which he was allowed to hire all of the avant-garde talents that he wanted. During the Second World War, he was appointed as a consultant to the office of Emergency Management, where he continued hiring top graphic designers to create propaganda aimed at the war industries, including the memorable Production poster by Jean Carlu (see lot 222). The Office of Civilian Defense was set up by President Franklin Roosevelt on May 20, 1941, although Coiner is credited with having designed the logo in 1939.

Artist: Charles Coiner Artist Dates: 1898-1989 Signed Within Plate: Attributed Date of Work: 1942 Description: Identifying armbands of all the branches of the Civilian Defense Corps are grouped together in poster that demonstrates the graphic genius of Charles Coiner, a very influential art director of â€˜the less is moreâ€™ school of modern design. His crisp streamlined designs were widely imitated but never duplicated. Lines and shapes appear to jump three dimensionally from the page if you look closely at one of his symbols. This collection is from Dr. David Orzeck by descent to his daughter Lida Orzeck and the entire collection is offered without reserve. Lida Orzeck came across more than 750 vintage war posters from World War I and World War II in her familyâ€™s home basement that her father, David Orzeck, a Brooklyn doctor, had meticulously collected. Discovered in 1970, the posters â€" of which few pristine prints remain with the exception of the National Archives and the Library of Congress â€" were in mint condition, neatly catalogued and folded in brown wrapping paper from grocery stores. Size: 28"L x 40"H Weight: < 1 pound Provenance: Dr. David Orzeck Condition: Poster has original fold marks and has not been exposed to sunlight, thus preserving the vibrant colors. Recently linen backed. Artist Biography: Charles Toucey Coiner was an American painter and advertising art director. Born into a California farming family, Coiner attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the Art Institute of Chicago, while also working at an advertising agency.
