          Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Peter Coker RA, British 1926-2004 - Badenscallie; oil on canvas, signed with initials lower right 'PC', 86.7 x 102.2 cm (ARR) Exhibited: Royal Academy, London, Summer Exhibition, 1987 (according to the label affixed to the reverse) Note: This is a sensational example of Peter Coker’s mature style, demonstrating his intense and singular take on the British landscape tradition. Utilising heavy paint and a unique use of colour, the artist conveys the feeling of the Scottish landscape with a piercing power. Coker was originally associated with the Kitchen Sink School in the 1950s, alongside his contemporaries John Bratby, Derrick Greaves, Jack Smith and Edward Middleditch. From the 1960s he moved passed this style, becoming further celebrated for his landscapes. His work is in all major UK collections, including the Tate, the Royal Academy, London and the National Galleries of Scotland. Please refer to department for condition report

Peter Coker RA, British 1926-2004 - Study for Carcasses on Bench, 1955; pencil and oil on paper

          Est: £400 - £600

Peter Coker RA, British 1926-2004 - Study for Carcasses on Bench, 1955; pencil and oil on paper, signed with initials lower left 'PC' and dated lower right '55', with artist's label affixed to the reverse of the frame, 26 x 21.3 cm (ARR) Note: this is a study for one of Coker’s most important series relating to the butchers shop from his Kitchen Sink period. Important examples of paintings from the series are ‘Butcher Shop, 1955’ (Sheffield City Art Gallery) and ‘Butcher Shop II, 1955’ (Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery). This work was a study for his RA Diploma Picture, 1955, which was presented in 1972. It demonstrates the intense, coarse style he was using at the time, evoking a tough realism. Other studies are now in the Tate and V & A collections. Butcher shop works were a central theme in his one-man show at the Zwemmer Gallery in 1956. The Kitchen Sink School was a term coined by David Sylvester in 1954 to refer to the social realist style of Coker’s contemporaries John Bratby, Derrick Greaves, Jack Smith and Edward Middleditch in the 1950s. Visiting initially in 1985 shortly following the sudden death of his son, Coker threw himself into exploring the landscape and the work that he produced is frequently considered among his best.In 1987, on his third visit, Coker encountered fishermen drying and mending their salmon nets and this theme became central to his body of work. The manner in which these nets were draped and hung divided and bisected the view in a way that he had not seen before and provided a new framework in which to envisage the landscape. The resulting works range from the entirely realistic to boldly abstract depictions to all manner in-between. In his book on the artist, David Wootton describes the present work as unrestrained expressionism (op. cit. p. 103). The common theme of all the works from this series is the juxtaposition of the upright poles against the curve of the ropes and the cross-hatching of the nets. The artist also never loses sight of the sense of place - the spirit of these remote settlements and the wildness of the scenery.
