          Oct. 14, 2023

Willie Cole, American b. 1955, The Ogun Sisters

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Willie Cole American, b. 1955 The Ogun Sisters 2012 serigraph and solar plate on BFK Rives paper 30 x 22 inches signed, titled, dated and numbered, 22/55 Published by Raven Fine Art Editions; Curlee Raven Holton, master printer. Willie Cole was born in New Jersey in 1955. He studied at the The School of Visual Arts, New York and the Art Students League. His work combines visual references of African and African American imagery with Dada-type “readymades”, such as irons, hair dryers, matches and lawn jockeys. His work has been exhibited at the Montclair Art Museum (2006), University of Wyoming Art Museum (2006), the Tampa Museum of Art (2004), Miami Art Museum (2001), Bronx Museum of the Arts (2001) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1998). Cole’s, The Ogun Sisters, addresses domestic roles associated with black women: the composition is a mirror image, insinuating repetition and, along with the faces of the f igure(s) being obscured by a mask, loss of identity. The superimposed symbol in the foreground (below) represents the most basic atom of the element iron (26 protons and 30 neutrons), but more than just doubling up on the theme of iron, it evokes the notion of fundamentalism. The symbol (above) represents Ogun, a warrior spirit found in several African religions, and the god of metal (iron). The Ogun Sisters is found in a number of important museum collections.

Published by The Experimental Print Institute, Lafayette College, Easton, PA, in collaboration with Hummingbird Press Editions, Massachusetts. Provenance: acquired from Hummingbird Press, Chicago; private collection, Illinois. Cole describes this recent print, bordered by steam iron impressions, as 'a collection of symbols.' The artistexplains 'the top symbol is the Haitian veve [sign] for oGUN, the Yoruba deity whose element is iron. The bottom symbol represents the chemical element iron as a mix of protons and neutrons.' Cole's central pair of uniformed, ironing women each have a same circle above their hearts representing the proton and neutron mixture of iron shown enlarged below. The image of the ironing woman derives from an archival photo dating from the early 1950s of a single female student at Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youths in Bordentown, New Jersey, where Cole's aunt was a student. This coed, state-funded boarding school, which closed in 1955, was a northern version of Alabama's famed Tuskegee institute. The heads of the ironing women are classic masks of the Dan people, based in the central west coast of Africa in what are now Liberia and the Ivory Coast. By duplicating and flipping the photo of the ironing woman, Cole creates a third figure in the middle, which he sees as 'medical, like he's laid out on the table, all dressed in white and being resuscitated by the heat from their irons.'

        • Willie Cole, b. 1955, The Ogun Sisters, Serigraph and solar plate, 30 x 22 inches
          Nov. 14, 2020

Willie Cole, b. 1955, The Ogun Sisters, Serigraph and solar plate, 30 x 22 inches

          Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Willie Cole b. 1955 The Ogun Sisters Serigraph and solar plate 2012 signed, titled, dated and numbered 48/55. Published by Raven Fine Art Editions; Curlee Raven Holton, master printer. 30 x 22 inches

WILLIE COLE (1955 - ) I sacrifice my Selix. Mixed media assemblage with iron scorched canvas and a Proctor Silex iron, 1991. 1245x940x89 mm; 49x37x3 1/2 inches. Signed, titled and dated in ink, verso. Provenance: Peter Miller Gallery, Chicago; the Dr. Robert H. Derden Collection of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1991). Exhibited: A Black Collector's Odyssey in Contemporary Art, Community Gallery of Art, College of Lake County, Grayslake, IL, January 12 - February 25, 1990; The Object Redux: Re-used, Renewed and Reinvented, Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Art, Racine, Wisconsin, September 18 - November 6, 1994. This early and significant example of Willie Cole's incorporates both his signature use of a hot iron to scorch the canvas and an attached Proctor Silex steam iron. Cole first began making his iron scorch paintings during his Studio Museum in Harlem residency of 1990. The Protor Silex iron, according to Patterson Sims in Anxious Objects: Willie Cole's Favorite Brands, was prized by the artist "for its overall design and the pattern of its perforations." Sims pp. 41 and 103.
