Joe Coleman American, b. 1955 Untitled (The 2 Headed Baby), 1987 Signed Joe Coleman and dated 1987 (lr) Acrylic on fiber board 24 x 30 inches (60.96 x 76.2 cm) Unframed With an artistic output combining wildly confrontational performance pieces, music and painting, Joe Coleman proved too bizarre even for the outlaw East Village scene of the 1980s of which he was tangentially linked. Coleman creates his works with a OCD-level of detail, using a one-hair brush and jeweler's lens, oftentimes completing only one square inch of a painting per day. Coleman's introspective study of his difficult childhood, as well as an obsession for the taboo morbidity of the carnival sideshow has at times unfairly caused his work to be lumped into the Outsider Art and Lowbrow Art movements. However, Coleman's work, which has its own grotesque brand of humor, part P.T. Barnum, part B-movie horror show, is a unique take on the darker tales hidden within American culture.
