          WILLIAM STEPHEN COLEMAN (England, 1829- 1904) "Pompeian Scene". Oil on canvas. Relined. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Size: 66 x 43 cm; 79 x 56 cm (frame). Coleman was unsuccessful in his career as a surgeon and turned to natural history illustration. He collaborated with Harrison Weir, Joseph Wolf and others; he was assisted in the preparation of the woodblocks by his sister Rebecca. He painted in watercolour, mainly landscapes with figures, in a style with something in common with Birket Foster, and semi-classical subjects, related to those of Albert Joseph Moore. William Stephen Coleman Coleman also produced etchings, occasionally worked in pastel and painted in oil. He was a member of the original managing committee of the Dudley Gallery, contributing to the first exhibition in 1865. He continued to exhibit until 1879 and remained on the committee until 1881. In 1869 Coleman began experimenting with pottery decoration; the Mintons Art Pottery Studio at Kensington Gore was established under his direction in 1871, and he executed figure designs for Mintons pottery.

          WILLIAM STEPHEN COLEMAN (1829-1904) The 'Cup and Ball' Game Oil on canvas, 64 x 41cm Signed and dated 1882 Provenance: Private Collection, Dublin. Born in Sussex in 1829 the son of surgeon William Thomas Coleman and his wife Henrietta Dendy, his elder sister was artist Helen Cordelia Coleman (1847-1884) Coleman was unsuccessful in a career as a surgeon and turned to natural history illustration. He painted mainly landscapes with figures, in a style with something in common with watercolourist Miles Birket Foster , and concentrated on semi-classical figure subjects. His classically-influenced works placed him in the toga and terrace or marble school with artists George Bulleid , W. Anstey Dollond , Norman Prescott-Davies and Oliver Rhys . Coleman was a versatile artist, executing etchings, occasionally working in pastel, but primarily painting exquisitely in oil. He was a member of the original committee of management of the Dudley Gallery in London, contributing to the first exhibition in 1865. He continued to exhibit till 1879, and remained on the committee till 1881. In 1869 Coleman began to experiment in pottery and porcelain decoration. The Mintons Art Pottery Studio in Kensington Gore was established under his direction in 1871, and he executed figure designs for Mintons ceramic ware. He died after a long illness at 11 Hamilton Gardens, St. John's Wood , on 22 March 1904.
