Maximilien Colin (NY,CT,1862-1894) oil painting antique

      Est: $425 - $550

ARTIST: Maximilian Colin (New York, Connecticut, Russia, 1862 - 1894) NAME: Buggy Scene MEDIUM: oil on canvas CONDITION: Tear 1" long by right edge. Three punctures. Some craquelure. Some inpainting along upper edge. SIGHT SIZE: 13 x 16 inches / 33 x 40 cm FRAME SIZE: unframed (In-House framing available) SIGNATURE: lower left CATEGORY: antique vintage painting AD: ART CONSIGNMENTS WANTED. CONTACT US SKU#: 120932 US Shipping $49 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Trained in Paris, Maximilien Colin was a perceptive painter of domestic scenes whose work manifests the influence of Alfred Stevens and James Tissot, both painters of upper-class women in beautiful surroundings and attire. Younger than these artists, Colin preferred more down-to-earth subjects. Here, though the woman is wealthy and her surroundings well-appointed, the artist subtly evokes her dissatisfaction. The jumble of books and newspapers, the sheet music on the floor, and the buckled carpet all point to a household in disarray, which seems to evoke the matron's inner turmoil. Unfulfilled in the role of wife and mother, she reads to escape her boredom and, distracted even from that, stares pensively into space.

The Spirit of America: American Art from 1829 to 1970, New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC, 2002, color illus., cat. 33 Born "Maximilien Cohen," in Bromberg, Prussia, the artist changed his last name to Colin at some point after 1880. He became a naturalized United States citizen in 1889. In the following year, he traveled to France, where he studied with the American painter Henry Mosler and the French painter Fernand Cormon. Evoking the ennui of an American woman abroad in Paris in a novel by Henry James, this painting is likely to be the work Colin exhibited as Souvenirs at the Paris Salon of 1891. A review described this work as showing a young woman "sitting lanquidly in a chair . . .[she] has evidently exhausted all attempts at killing time with music and reading, and has taken to her own thoughts as the least wearisome." Colin returned to New York in late 1892 and an exhibition of his work was held at the Holbein Company in February of 1893. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
