Paul (1892) Colin Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Caricaturist, b. 1892 - d. 1985

Paul Colin (27 June 1892 in Nancy, France – 18 June 1985 in Nogent-sur-Marne) was one of France’s greatest poster artists.

Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped to launch the career of Josephine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes.

Very Art déco at the outset, (his Le Tumulte noir is a masterpiece of the genre), his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. A student of Eugène Vallin and of Victor Prouvé, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. He is the author of more thab 1,400 posters and many theatrical set and costume designs. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics.[1]

He was the master of painter Philippe Derome and poster artists duo Lefor-Openo

An original vintage poster of singer and Broadway star Adelaide Hall by Paul Colin advertising Blackbirds at the Moulin Rouge in 1929, sold on 2 October 2003 at Swann Auction Galleries in New York for $167,500.[2] The sale signalled a record high for an original Paul Colin poster.

Paul Colin A Nous la Liberte 93.25 h x 124.25 w in (237 x 316 cm) "In Rene Clair's brilliant and lighthearted satire of social protest, 'A Nous La Liberte,' Raymond Cordy and Henri Marchand are cell mates who separate during an escape attempt. One becomes an industrialist whose mass-production methods closely parallel the dehumanizing prison routine, while the other remains a free soul. Their reunon some years later results in Cordy abandoning his wealth and joining Marchand on the open road. It was one of the most influential films of the early sound era and pioneered the functional, integrated use of music. It served as inspiration for Charlie Chaplin's 'Modern Times.' And it produced a Colin poster which simply but effectively captured the free spirit and human impulse which Rene Clair sought to convey in his film" (Colin, p. 9). Paul Colin Bal des Petits Lits Blancs 1930 31 h x 15.5 w in (79 x 39 cm) This beautifully prismatic and stylized poster was created for the veritable Parisian institution whose annual children's hospital benefit gala attracted throngs of guests and top poster designers (George Barbier, Francis Bernard, Leonetto Cappiello, and Charles Gesmar, for example). Above the information regarding the many prizes available to the lucky winners of the evening's drawings, Colin puts the smart set in motion, on top of which the beaming face of a child reminds us of the purpose behind the frivolity. Paul Colin Tabarin 1928 23.5 h x 15.875 w in (60 x 40 cm) The Bal Tabarin opened its doors in 1904, and became home to the cancan, then later the Charleston, and then whatever the latest dance craze was. From the outside it looked like the entrance to a tomb, but inside it was hot and, as the magazine Candide put it: "The star of the Tabarin, that's woman" (March 4, 1937). To say this graphically, Colin uses one of his favorite techniques, a multiple exposure portraying the history of dance at the Tabarin: Jane Avril does the cancan, La Argentina swishes her flamenco skirt, and Josephine Baker struts toward us doing the Charleston. This is the smaller format. Colin met her at the Apollo, where he was kept busy with decors, programs, advertisements and posters. It was there she created the French version of the celebrated 'Trial of Mary Dugan,' and, in 1930, starred in the Noel Coward operetta, 'Waltz Time'" (Colin, p. 9). Paul Colin S.N.C.F. 1947 39.125 h x 24.75 w in (99 x 63 cm) Silhouettes of an engineer and a conductor set against a never-ending sea of train tracks result in a powerful Deco design. "The whole impression which the French Railways tried to convey here, and which the graphics reinforce so directly, is that of strength, stability and safety—all important elements of 'A Public Service at the Service of the Public'" (Colin, p. 12). The apparent simplicity of the art and tag line belie a complex political reality in postwar France: consolidating the welfare state while mollifying the right wing and marginalizing the Communist Party. In this context, Colin's design is superb: the conductor in blue, a worker in red, and a multitude of tracks stretching to the horizon: an assembly of roles with a common goal. Paul Colin Damia / Columbia 1930 23.25 h x 15.25 w in (59 x 39 cm) Born in 1892, Maryse "Damia" Damien is often called "the grande dame" of French song. She began her career as a member of Loie Fuller's troupe, appearing in Folies-Bergere revues and various small plays and films before making it as a chanteuse. Her signature ensemble consisted of a long, black, sleeveless dress with a deep, plunging neckline, as shown here by Colin. He also claims to be the person who came up with the idea of placing her in front of a black velvet curtain, allowing only her pale face and arms to be seen by the audience—a trick she used her entire professional life. This is the smaller format version of the design. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris Literature: Colin, p. 55; PAI-XCII, 195 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

"Der schwarze Stern Europas" -- Baker, Josephine. Memoiren. (Herausgegeben von Marcel Sauvage). 212 S., 2 Bl. Mit 30 zumeist ganzseitigen Textillustrationen von Paul Colin. 19 x 12,5 cm. Wohlerhaltenes Exemplar.

The outline of a giraffe is filled with silhouettes that simultaneously evoke local sights and suggest the animal's distinctive splotches. The background has all the hues of sunset from the last orange glow at top to blue-green shadows at bottom. Paul Colin Salon International de l'Aviation 1946 61.5 h x 44.5 w in (156 x 113 cm) A fuselage flies the flags of the world, announcing that the entire aviation world will be represented at the 17th International Air Show in Paris. The design displays the two vital elements of Colin's genius: his delight in the "graphicness" of the simple message in a visually surprising and engaging way. In that regard, he is the editorial illustrator-laureate of this century. Imp. S. A. Courbet, Paris Literature: Colin, 134; PAI-XXVII, 74 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.
