      * Collenius (Hermannus Collum, 1649/1650-1723 Groningen). Allegory of the Transience of Wordly Affairs Collenius (Hermannus, 1649/1650-1723 Groningen). Allegory of the Transience of Wordly Affairs, oil on canvas, relined on a modern stretcher, 120 x 98 cm (47 1/4 x 38 1/2 ins), antique-style painted black wood frame, with decorative gilt inner slip QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Baumcotter Gallery, Kensington Church Street, London, 1970's; Kunsthandel Schlichte Bergen, Amsterdam,1985; Private Collection, Shropshire. Literature: Freerk Veldman, Hermannus Collenius 1650-1723 (Zwolle, 1997), p. 98. The present work has been accepted as authentic by Eddy Schavemaker of the RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie), in The Hague (email correspondence). Another variant of this composition (signed and measuring 100 x 88 cm) is in the Mesdag Collection, The Hague (catalogue number 59A). Collenius spent most of his career in Groningen, and specialised in portraits, allegorical and mythological subjects. For the City Hall in Groningen the artist was commissioned to paint The Allegory of Good Governance in 1685 (now in the Groninger Museum), and for the Statenzaal in the Raadhuis,The Allegory of Freedom and Religion. In the present work, the young woman in her opulent white silk dress with exposed breast is seen seated holding a casket of jewels while a child holds up a convex mirror to her, and an old man shows her a skull and hourglass; to the left putti play with soap bubbles in front of a group of musical instruments, including a lute, violin, and cello. If the overt symbolism on display regarding the transience of life was not already clear enough, a large folio edition of a Dutch bible also features, open on the first page of Ecclesiastes (the Old Testament book in which the well-known phrases 'eat, drink, and be merry', and 'vanity of vanities; all is vanity', first appear). Of significant interest in this work is the presence of a black maid, or female servant, seen on the right braiding the young woman's hair with pearls, the latter being a traditional attribute of the courtesan. Much has been written in recent decades regarding the significance and interpretation of works of art featuring people of colour in Dutch 17th-century painting. Such figures are most often portrayed as servants, thus enhancing the status of the main figure.

    • An oil painting by Hermannus Collenius (1650 - 1723), Vertumnus und Pomona, 17th century
      Sep. 25, 2020

An oil painting by Hermannus Collenius (1650 - 1723), Vertumnus und Pomona, 17th century

      Est: -

Herman(nus) Collenius (1650 - 1723), a large-format oil painting on canvas, signed H. Collenius at the centre left, representing the tale of Vertumnus and Pomona from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Lined, in a baroque-style frame. Size of the painting 114 x 157, including frame 134 x 176 x 6 cm. Hermannus Collenius, born in Kollum in 1650 as the son of a goldsmith, died in Groningen in 1721 or, more likely, in 1723. It is not known where Collenius trained as a painter. At the end of 1669, he settled in Groningen, where he joined the glaziers' and painters' guild. Specialising in historical and portrait painting, he achieved renown for painting historical scenes in particular, and probably also embarked on a journey to Italy. Moreover, he worked as an interior painter, decorating one of the largest manor houses in Groningen in 1695, that of Nienoord, among others. Literature: Freerk J. Veldman: Hermannus Collenius 1650 - 1723. Zwolle 1997, p. 96. Provenance: 1970, at auction in Vienna, in Cologne in 1974, in private ownership since then, until 2019. Condition: II Condition Report: On the right, with an admonishing, pointing gesture, an old woman approaches a beautiful young woman. The young woman is depicted with a wreath of flowers in her hair and a wicker basket with freshly harvested berries and fruits. She folds her hands with the small sickle loosely over each other, her upper body turned away from the old woman. They sit in an idealised park landscape with a fountain in the middle ground and antique sculptures in the background, while lush greenery frames the scene on the left and right. A peacock sits enthroned on a classical pedestal in the foreground. At her feet, a black and white spotted puppy is curled up asleep. According to the tale, Pomona, goddess of fruitful abundance, shows no interest in her admirers, invariably rejecting them, like the god Vertumnus. She prefers to take care of her plants and her garden. The enamoured Vertumnus tries in vain to approach her in many forms. He finally approaches Pomona as a crone, singing love's praises as well as his own. Vertumnus points to a vine tendril that has grown up around an elm, saying that man and woman must also bind themselves together in love in this way for their mutual benefit. When Vertumnus then turns into a young man, Pomona relents. The peacock, symbol of the goddess Juno, protector of women, represents the wise choice that Pomona has made with Vertumnus.

Collenius, Hermannus: Porträt einer Edeldame mit Zeitmesser, im Hintergrund Ausblick in eine Parklandschaft

      Est: €4,500 - €5,000
