JOHN COLLIER FSA Farmer White House Ruins 1940

      Est: $400 - $600

JOHN COLLIER. Untitled (Navajo Farmer, White House Ruins, Canyon De Chelly AZ), c. 1935-1942. 9.8x7.8" gelatin silver print. Printed c. 1935-1942. Signed in pencil on print verso. John Collier, Jr. (1913-1992) was best known for his use of photography as a method of anthropologic and ethnographic study. His 1967 book, Visual Anthropology: Photography as a Research Method, was one of the earliest visual anthropology textbooks and is still used today. The child of sociologist John Collier, Collier, Jr. was born in Sparkill, New York, the son of the famous American Indian Commissioner John Collier, but spent his childhood split between New Mexico, staying with family friends in the Taos Indian Pueblo, and California, where he spent much of his time with painter Maynard Dixon, then married to Dorothea Lange. In 1941, likely due to Lange's influence, some of Collier's work came to the attention of Roy Stryker, who hired him for the Farm Security Administration. His employment there cemented his photography career, and he continued working with Stryker until 1946. Collier collaborated with his wife on several major projects for social scientist Alexander Leighton, who encouraged them to formalize methodologies for using photography in social science research. Their travels took them from the Maritimes of Canada to Peru, as Collier established visual anthropology as its own observational science. Although he is recognized as a talented photographer, his major accomplishment was truly his contribution to and work in visual anthropology. Credit: https://20x200.com/collections/john-collier-jr

JOHN COLLIER, JR. (1913-1992) A suite of 5 photographs, including two of young men with prize cows (Presque Isle, ME), and three of fig

      Est: $1,200 - $1,800

JOHN COLLIER, JR. (1913-1992) A suite of 5 photographs, including two of young men with prize cows (Presque Isle, ME), and three of figures working. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 190.5x241.3 mm; 7 1/2x9 1/2 inches, the sheets slightly larger, each with the RA number, in pencil, in an unknown hand, on verso. 1942-43. John Collier Jr. was a pioneer in the fields of visual and applied anthropology. At 12 years old, he apprenticed under Maynard Dixon, then married to Dorothea Lange. Following this experience, Collier began working as a freelance photographer in New Mexico and California, and he was hired by Roy Stryker to be part of the FSA project in 1941. Rather than continuing his photography in the Southwest, Collier was sent to New England to photograph rural communities. This period, in turn, led to his intense interest in anthropology and the connection between people and the land.
