The Hon. John Collier RA (1850-1934) British, a very large full-length portrait of Henry William Cripps (1815-1899) and his wife, Julia (née Lawrence, 1820-1912), oil on canvas, signed to lower left corner and dated 1895, painted on commission and presented to the couple by their children to mark their golden wedding, 230 cm x 167 cm in a gilt frame. Footnote: Provenance: The property of a Lord and Lady, direct from the Parmoor archive. Henry William Cripps, born in 1815, came to Parmoor in 1860 with his wife and family. He was the eldest son of the Revd. Henry Cripps, vicar of Preston near Cirencester, whose father, Joseph, was Member for Cirencester and later Father of the House of Commons. He was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford, being head of the school and Prefect of Hall and a Scholar at New College where he later became a Fellow, retaining his Fellowship until he married in 1845. He was President of the Oxford Union Society in 1837. His wife, Julia, was the eldest daughter of Charles Lawrence of the Querns, Cirencester. They were first cousins and had known each other since childhood. He was called to the Bar and became a Queen's Counsel in 1866, his chief work being in the Parliamentary Committee Rooms and on Circuit. He was, by nature, a farmer, devoted to sport and all forms of country life, and was never happier than when talking to his men or to the village children, for whom he always carried a bag of sweets in his pocket which he scattered for them to pick up, usually from above a branch so that they wondered whether he was a wizard, or whether the sweets had fallen, like manna, from heaven. He later was appointed Recorder of Lichfield and Chancellor of the diocese of Oxford; and was also unanimously elected Chairman of the first Buck County Council and of the Bucks Quarter Sessions. Our grandmother, Julia, was a truly devoted wife and bore him a family of nine children. She was a great disciplinarian and a devoutly religious woman; family prayers, as in many families similarly situated, were said once and often twice daily. Three of their daughters married clergymen, one of whom, Herbert Stanton, became Rector of Hambleden, whilst the two others were curates at Frieth.

        JOHN COLLIER

        Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Footnotes Provenance By direct descent from the sitter to Katharina Wolpe, whose father, the composer Stefan Wolpe (1902-1972) was the cousin of the sitter Gifted to the present owner, in 2013 Private collection, UK Exhibited London, Royal Academy, 1926, no.525 Literature Royal Academy Illustrated, 1926, p.101, illustrated in black and white Ina De La Haye, neé Fedosia Merkel, was a Russian born actress and singer. Born in St, Petersburg in 1906, Fedosia and her younger brother Ilya fled Russia following the Revolution. By 1921 she was working as a correspondent for a journal in Riga, and by 1924 she had entered London society. The famous society photographer Madame Yevonde captured her likeness that same year. Fedosia married Colonel J. V. De La Haye and, under the name of Ina De La Haye worked as an actress, appearing on the stage and in numerous films and television roles from the late 1940s until the early 1970s. She died in 1972 in Ticehurst, England. The present lot is a striking contrast to many of John Collier's more sombre society portraits. Collier was a prolific exhibitor at the Royal Academy, showing 85 works between 1874 and his death in 1934. Collier's portraits of women are among his most appealing works, seeming to free the artist from the formality of the portrait genre. In Mrs Osborne (Plymouth City Council: Museum and Art Gallery) for example, the sitter has her back the viewer, her head turned in side profile; here, the artist positions the sitter face on to the viewer, her elegant robe contrasting with the striking green background.

Wallace spoke in Detroit in October 1968 as part of his campaign for President as a third party candidate. His image is frightening. His ghost presides over the current campaign season. John Collier "Alone" Beaten by Detroit Police, 1973

        Est: $600 - $1,000

JOHN COLLIER, "ALONE" 1973. 12 ¼ x 18 ¾ - inch gelatin silver print mounted on board. Collier was a photographer for the Detroit Free Press. His photographs transcend the ephemeral needs of the daily newspaper. These are from richly printed enlargements he submitted to various competitions. His title indicates an artistic function. This is a powerful portrait of the subject in a wintry urban alley. Collier's application form is attached to the verso, as well as a copy of the story the photograph illustrated. The subject was beaten by the Detroit police. He had previously won a judgment against the police for a first beating. These photographs from the 1960's and '70's are a reminder that some of the issues coming to prominence today have a long history in our country. [4]
