        ASHLEY COLLINS - SOLDADO

Ashley Collins American, b. 1967 Soldado Mixed Media, oil and acrylic, LED neon, wire mesh, book covers, matte varnish Signed One of Collins “Furious Angel” grouping of works that sold out their first three shows, Soldado literally means “Soldier.” Yet for Collins, the definition is expanded… for each of us, if we truly want to accomplish something in life, must carry with us the devotion and dedication of a Soldier. A mother’s hourly watch over a child. A stranger setting aside their plans to help someone less fortunate. A father who gives up self to be there. A business owner who survives every setback, every battle, to steer through to beautiful success. A musician who’s countless hours and years of struggle and practice, finally bring forth the most magical symphony. A foal, whose years of nurturing, returns the momentous cup. Each of us have within us, a Soldier. A Fighter. A Champion who will rise time and time again. Our wings are not frail, but made of metal and light, of strength and determination. A power of force, and of love, that cannot be denied.

Ashley Collins "American Horse" Mixed Media

        Est: -

From sleeping on concrete studio floors to breaking price point records for living female contemporary painters, Collins has produced a diverse composition of works, many of which involve contemporary and abstract depictions of the horse. Collins has surpassed both trend and time to create works which are distinct and carry an imprint which is instantly recognizable. Her mythicvisions integrate text and illustration recalling history, literature and the spirit of the figures she depicts. Her large scale mixed-media images exist in an ambiguous realm that captivates our imagination as well as our admiration. Her figures appear as candid moments of time theatrically caught in a split second. Printed words that appear in each painting are at first ambiguous. But closer examination reveals clues to suggestnarrative. Using such materials as paper aged in her studio, the process of application is apparent in Collins' works. The effect of yellowed, aging texts and ancient surfaces painted into the works add a nostalgic;     Ref: BD1043

      • Ashley Collins - Of Records, Of Crowns, Of Love

Ashley Collins - Of Records, Of Crowns, Of Love

        Est: $40,000 - $50,000

Ashley Collins (American, born 1967) OF RECORDS, OF CROWNS, OF LOVE $40,000. – $50,000. Mixed media, 48” x 72” Signed, inscribed verso $40,000. – 50,000. It is the run toward the goal that brings the excitement … the moment when optimism and hope surround all? But is it just the race for the Triple Crown? A new course record? A new title? Or is it something much greater? The love of the sport, the love of the soul of the horse, the love of those that join in the adventure and support you even at your most trying moments? As one of the world’s most successful living female contemporary painters, Collins is known for her intensely layered works and also for her sense of play. This work is no exception. Collins plays with the concept of “record” by including an old vinyl phonograph record, reminding us to hear the music along the journey. An old cigar box top “La Palina” is a symbol of childish joy, for the old cigar box under the bed hid the best-kept secrets: marbles, toy soldiers, dolls. And though our cigar boxes might be far larger as adults, their contents should still be a secret joy to be savored. The work is filled with historic pages from an 1868 Harper’s weekly, providing sneak peeks into the linotypes of the period and reminding us that many before us have paved the paths that allow us to engage our ambitions. A Boy Scout magazine from the 1950s, an early 1900s postcard, and clothespins from Collins’ grandmother again speak to the timelessness of our journey. A playful wheel is a counterpoint to a “spur” made of keys, a symbol to spur not the horse but rather ourselves to reach new heights. The work is enhanced by Collins’ famous crowns, the words “Warrior You,” “Triple Crown,” and “The Skin Horse.” The above are only small samples of hidden surprises that will be found in this amazing painting for generations to come. It is our own Records, Our own Crowns, and our own Love, that complete life. (Text courtesy of the artist)

        Nov. 19, 2017

PLOW by Ashley Collins (American, born 1967)

        Est: $80,000 - $100,000

Mixed media, 84” x 96” Signed Plow, alternatively referred to by Collins as Grandfather’s Pocket Watch, is at first glance an homage to those that sacrifice for others, that have gone before us, tilling the soil, awakening before the sunrise, and ceasing work long after dark, day after day. The definition of toil. Collins’ grandfather, who farmed and worked in the textile mills, felt the yoke of that call, and pushed through, hour after hour, for his family and those that would follow. Yet from that sweat-filled toil, because of that sacrifice, others can leap to freedom. The sheer joy and power of the horse bursting through the words “plow,” unaccepting of a structured life with limits, breaks free from all bonds to follow our dreams, our hearts. The figurative horse seems both to embrace and emanate from a concerted chaos of colors and layers. Among the many textured layers, sings a hidden heart — a drawing that in its simplicity embraces all. The toil, the strength, the leap, the freedom, the dreams. The soil indeed must be tilled, must be ripped from its peaceful slumber by muscle-draining strength, but the harvest of generations is that of chasing dreams. Text courtesy of the artist

        REVE

        Est: $145,000 - $165,000

Ashley Collins (American, born 1967) REVE Mixed media, 96" x 120" Signed $145,000. - 165,000. "Reve" (to dream), which was three years in the making, includes among obscured and partially obscured pages of collage historical pages of the Treasure Hunt; linotype pages from Grahams magazine, 1890; partially obscured images of the photographs of Edward Muybridge; 19th-century poems; and historical book covers, including Samantha at Saratoga, written in 1897 by Marrieta Holley. Varied as these images may seem, it is the dreams of life that tie each together. The figurative image of the horse is a study of power, strength and confidence_the nostrils flare as the horse rears toward its full height, taking on all doubters. Note the coloration and placement of the license plate from 1935. The year Seabiscuit ran 35 races as a two-year-old, three of them claiming races where he could have been bought for $2,500, finishing first five times and second seven times, no one could look beyond the small size and confirmation of the horse. No one could see the dream unfolding of this horse that would become one of the most famous racehorses in history. Collins has chosen this year as a reminder that while others may underestimate us, we should never underestimate ourselves. Most of all, we should never forgo our dreams, our own "Reve."

        Nov. 19, 2014

        Collins, Ashley - Hercules

        Est: $145,000 - $165,000

HERCULES Hercules presents the beautiful struggle which defines us - finding our greatest strength and balancing our greatest compassion. Rejoicing in our own power to create history. Most of us are familiar with the outlines of the story of Hercules, the Roman name for the Greek divine hero Heracles, son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene. But there is yet another story of Hercules, which for Collins better defines our own struggle: Hercules the racehorse. Born in 1826 and at 15.2 hands, Sir Hercules was discounted early on. Yet this amazing horse, with little room even for a saddle, went on to be undefeated in Ireland, to win the Sweepstakes at York, the Claret Stakes, and Liverpool's Stand Cup. After his victories he was again discounted as a stud, shuffled and shunted between seller and buyer without thought ... yet both his sons and daughters had a profound impact on the bloodlines of horses in Australia, England, Ireland, the United States, and France. How like our own life and accomplishments. We are each alternately praised and discounted throughout our lives, but it is the strength of our individual souls that rises above both praise and critique, and lifts our lives beyond that which we see and touch. To be truly great is to impact future generations. In this master oil, Collins paints the figurative horse intentionally without exactness, preferring to allow the oils to drip symbols of age, the passing of time, wisdom gleaned. The figurative horse interacts with layers of historical pages from the 1800s, pages that were touched by those living concurrently with Sir Hercules. The word "alchemy" is painted as a throughline on the right side of the work, representing our destiny if we are only willing to see it, forward looking. References to Edward Muybridge, the famous photographer and the father of film, are found throughout the work as a reminder that we are always in motion, headed for achievement, aided by the strength of generations. Truly, we each have within us Hercules. Copy courtesy of Ashley Collins Studio
