Literature:Barbara Meadowcroft, Painting Friends: The Beaver Hall Women Painters, Véhicule Press, Montreal, 1999, page 104 for a photograph of Nora Collyer and Sarah Robertson on a Bermuda cruise circa 1929, reproduced.“The Beaver Hall Group: A Montreal Modernity” by Esther Trépanier in The Beaver Hall Group: 1920s Modernism in Montreal, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Black Dog Publishing, Montreal/London, 2015, page 226. Note:Nora Collyer is known for her rich landscapes of rural Quebec (see lots 6 and 7), however, Esther Trépanier notes that “Portayal of the human figure in a landscape setting was another characteristic feature of the works of several Montreal artists pursuing a modern practice during the 1920s.” Typically the three dimensional figure dominated the composition and was positioned against a flattened background. While the landscape was not always linked to the sitter – often the relationship was more formal than personal- in this case the choice of a landmark so immediately identifiable with Bermuda is not arbitrary. While we have not been able to identify Alberta, her authoritative almost regal pose suggests she was linked to the church in a leadership capacity. There is a formal connection, too. The pinks, blues and creams of Alberta’s scarf are repeated in the church, and the fluffy foliage of the trees is echoed in her coiffure. St. Peter’s Church is the oldest standing church in Bermuda, dating back to 1612 when it was built to establish a community in the newly discovered parish of St. George. Intentionally planting a Christian church in the middle of the “new world,” the church marked the beginning of Christian worship in the country of Bermuda.Estimate: $25,000–40,000

Here, Nora Collyer interprets the village in rich, bold colours and the high vantage point she has selected affords an interesting tension between the perspective demanded by the view and an au fait flattening of the overall design. The result is charming.Estimate: $7,000–9,000

The delicate nature of her approach is reminiscent of that of her teacher, Maurice Cullen. Evelyn Walters notes that Collyer's technique "is never harsh and is remarkable for its shapes, rich colour, and soft rhythms." Just past bloom, these tulips cascade over their vase, a cavalcade of colour against the pale horizon.

Like many of its members, she particularly enjoyed sketching in the Quebec countryside. Her first sketching trips were with teacher Maurice Cullen, whom she met at the Art Association of Montreal, and it was on these trips that her characteristic quiet rhythm and soft shapes began to emerge. This work takes us to one of her favourite spots, nestled against the base of the hills in Cap-à-l'Aigle in Quebec. There is wonderful visual interest in this piece - the aging, dipped roof of the barn, the cluster of houses at the right, the zig-zag of the fence line and varying colors of the fields terraced up the hill. By 1947, as inscribed on verso, she was living at 3400 Ridgewood Avenue in Montreal with her longtime companion Margaret Reid. However, she would frequently return to the picturesque Cap-à-l'Aigle, and her affection for the area is clearly manifested in this charming work.

The Beaver Hall studio functioned as an art club - a place to meet and exchange ideas - and when they left two years later, the women members stayed connected as part of a network, exhibiting together and supporting each other. Art historian Paul Duval felt that the Beaver Hall Group "provided a strong impetus to the careers of many of the finest women painters Canada has so far produced." Collyer's family were members of Montreal's English Protestant elite, and the Beaver Hall women would often paint at the Collyer family farm at Foster. Collyer lived in Westmount, teaching art and painting, and spent her summers at Strawberry Hill, a cottage she built near Foster. This bold atmospheric scene of working men and horse-drawn sleighs is reminiscent of fellow Beaver Hall artist Kathleen Morris's scenes of Montreal cabstands. Pared down to its essential elements of form, this oil sketch, with its pigment-loaded brush-strokes, interesting aerial perspective and contrasts between bright snow highlighted with creamy pastels against rich reds and blues, radiates vitality, giving this street scene great visual impact.

She spent many summers at her parents' family cottage Hillcrest, near Foster, sometimes joined by other Beaver Hall Group artists such as Anne Savage, Ethel Seath and Sarah Robertson for sketching weekends. Known for her gift for friendship, Collyer was described by Savage as "one of the loveliest people imaginable." Collyer built her own cottage near Foster in 1950 overlooking Lake Memphremagog and spent her summers painting the surrounding area. Subjects such as rural houses, churches, farms and villages washed in sunlight formed the backbone of her oeuvre. Eastern Townships Landscape exhibits Collyer's volumetric sense of form, use of direct light and vigorous brushwork which emphasizes the gentle rhythms of this area. Both structures have a vibrant, well-tended feeling, as if their inhabitants are about to round the corner and, together with their tranquil lakeside settings and vibrant summer atmosphere, embody Collyer's warm and intimate feeling for this area.

Bouchard"""" Provenance:Private Collection, Montreal A prominent member of the Beaver Hall Group, Nora Collyer received the majority of her training at the Art Association of Montreal. She spent nine years there in total, taking part-time classes and attending sketching expeditions with Maurice Cullen and William Brymner on weekends. Those early trips would prove to be extremely influential for Collyer. Brymner and Cullen encouraged their students to abandon outdated conservative doctrine and free themselves to use their own methods of self-expression. Collyer achieved success in her career, exhibiting through the Canadian Group of Painters, and was given a solo exhibition in 1946 at the Dominion Gallery in Montreal. In her later years, Collyer sought out the waterways and townships n southeastern Quebec, continuing to explore the beloved landscapes introduced on those early expeditions. Port-au-Persil is a lovely example of Collyer's most mature and poignant work; her rich use of colour and soft brush-strokes lend an uncomplicated dreamy quality to this St. Lawrence town. "

However, it was the women members who are best remembered, and this group provided an impetus to the careers of some of the finest women painters in Canada. After they left their studio building at Beaver Hall Hill in 1924, a group of women members, including Collyer, formed a network. They consulted each other about their work, traveled and painted together and still exhibited under the Beaver Hall name. In a time when being a female artist could be a disadvantage, this support was invaluable. Collyer often painted in the Quebec countryside, as her family cottage was at Foster and from 1950 to 1967 she spent summers painting at a cottage she built nearby overlooking Lake Memphremagog. Collyer was known for her Eastern Township landscapes and Quebec village scenes such as this richly coloured work, a strong layered composition packed with interesting elements such as the village church, flooded with bright, clear light.
