      MAP, Southern USA, Colton

      Est: $2,500 - $3,250

Large-Scale Map of the South Issued During the Civil War. Southern United States, Civil War. Joseph Hutchins Colton, J.H. Colton's Map of the Southern States. Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas..., 1864 (dated). Hand Color. The title continues "Showing also Part of the Adjoining States & Territories Locating the Forts & Military Stations of the U. States & Showing all the Railroads, R.R. Stations & Other Internal Improvements." This is a large and highly detailed map of the southern states (Colton makes no mention of the Confederacy) that extends from the Atlantic coast to east Texas, south into Florida to below Sumter County, and north to above Bloomington, Illinois. It is filled with information locating towns, villages, post offices, railroads, stage roads, canals, trails, watershed and much more. The Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico are filled with ships, which depict the Union blockade of southern harbors. A large inset at right is the "Southern Part of Florida" which takes off from the main map on a slightly smaller scale. Another inset at lower right shows the United States with "Proposed Railroad Routes to the Pacific Ocean." This inset depicts large Dakota and Idaho territories and the southern tip of Nevada is part of Arizona. To the left of the inset maps is a population table based on the 1860 census with the categories Free States and Slave States. The cartography is taken from GLO maps and from the southern part of Calvin Smith's important large scale map (1843) of the U.S. and Canada. Embellished with a broad decorative border and fancy titling. This map has a copyright imprint of 1863 and is dated 1864. Other editions were printed in 1861 and 1862. Printed on two separate sheets and fold into brown cloth boards (5.2 x 8.2") with gilt title on the front cover. A scarce map issued near the end of the American Civil War. LITERATURE: Phillips (Maps) p. 909; Stephenson (CW) #37.6; Rumsey #4085.002.

      J.H Colton World Map c.1855

      Est: $100 - $200

J.H Colton World Map c.1855 Map of the eastern and western hemispheres by New York publisher J. H. Colton. Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) moved to New York City from his birthplace of Longmeadow, Massachusetts to start the J.H. Colton Company in 1831. Though he did not come from a cartographic or engraving background, Colton licensed copyrights from other cartographers such as David H. Burr and Samuel Stiles, producing quality reprints with additional engraving and border detail. After ten years of operating with this business model, Colton branched out to produce original maps, and by the 1850s had grown his company into a booming cartographic firm. Though the Colton Company published a variety of cartographic materials such as guidebooks and atlases, it is perhaps best known for its railroad maps. Distinguished by their elaborate decorative borders, Colton maps were printed using engraved steel plates which, though more costly than wax engravings, produced higher-quality images. These maps were then hand-colored by watercolor artists, resulting in slight irregularities which reflect the documents' unique history and individualized production. Notable moments in Colton's career include winning a high-profile lawsuit against the government of Bolivia, by whom he had been hired to produce some 2,500 maps of the region in 1857. When he did not receive pay upon completing his contract, mostly due to Bolivian civil unrest, Colton took legal action and eventually received $100,000 in compensation. Colton's sons George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901) and Charles B. Colton (1832-1916) joined the company in the early 1850s; when the two eventually took over from their father, they renamed the firm to G.W. & C.B. Colton. A few years later in 1898, the brothers went into business with August R. Ohman, renaming the firm again to Colton, Ohman, & Co. This relationship lasted until 1901 when the Coltons left the company and Ohman took over in full, subsequently dropping the Colton name. Framed, not inspected out of frame creatively framed. Approximate Size: 15.25" H x 26.75" W Approximate Size Framed: 21.25" H x 32.5" W
