        May. 30, 2024

        Charlotte Buell Coman (American/New York)

        Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Charlotte Buell Coman (American/New York, 1833-1924), "New Jersey Hills in Autumn from Cedar Crest Farm", oil on canvas, signed lower left, titled en verso and along upper tacking edge, 16 in. x 19 in., framed, overall 20 1/4 in. x 23 3/8 in. x 2 in. Note: Charlotte Coman started painting in her mid-forties after experiencing hearing loss and becoming almost entirely deaf. She studied in New York and Paris and was greatly influenced by the Barbizon school of painting. She adopted the style in her own landscapes and was one of several noted artists who brought Barbizon techniques to the United States. Good humored, Coman once joked that one of the advantages of hearing loss was that she was spared harsh criticism from art critics who shied away from shouting their opinions into her ear trumpet. Over time, her artwork evolved, and she became known for her tonalist quality and hazy, blue-toned landscapes. Her artwork can be found in the collections of the Arnot Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Ref.: Rubenstein, Charlotte Streifer. CHARLOTTE BUELL COMAN (1833-1924) OIL ON CANVAS

        Est: $1,000 - $1,500

A serene summer day depicted in oil on canvas and titled 'The Old Mill Race' (hand written artist's calling card on the back stretcher). A Mill Race is a channel or sluice through which water runs to a water wheel providing the power to mill and grinding grain into flour etc. This work is signed lower left front and also bears the artist's period calling card on the top back stretcher. Charlotte Buell Colman was an accomplished female artist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when women were rarely given recognition by male art jurors. This prejudice prompted her to merely sign her works simply C.B. Colman. Despite the challenges female artists faced, she "received much positive attention including election in 1910 as an Associate to the National Academy of Design". Her work was heavily influenced by the Barbizon tradition which she helped to introduce to America from her studies in France in the late 1880s. This work measures 13.5 x 11.5 inches and is beautifully framed to an overall size of 16.25 x 13.75 inches.

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Charlotte Buell Coman (American; 1833 - 1924) Still Life of Wildflowers Oil on canvas Signed LL: C.B. Coman. Born in Waterville, Iowa, Charlotte Buell Coman was a prominent late 19th, early 20th-century landscape artist known for her Tonalist paintings. She was a key painter in bringing the Barbizon tradition from France to America. At age forty, after the death of her husband and loss of her hearing, she committed herself to a career in art. Her first teacher was James Brevoort, a landscape painter of New York City. She continued for another ten years abroad, first in Paris where she exhibited at the Paris Salon and studied with Harry Thompson and Emile Vernier, and then six years in Holland. A studio fire destroyed the output of these years. In France, she was greatly influenced by the Barbizon painters and their attention to contrasting light and atmosphere as well as working in a broad-sweeping manner without attention to detail. In the early 1880s, she returned permanently to New York City where she had already been exhibiting at the National Academy of Design. In 1876, her painting A French Village, had earned her much praise at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Critics compared her work to Corot. However, she later turned away from European subjects and devoted herself to the American landscape, using a Tonalist approach and suggesting spirituality with misty effects achieved with dominance of subdued blues and greens. Coman received much positive attention including election in 1910 as an Associate to the National Academy of Design, but because of discrimination against women artists by male jurors, she always signed her work C.B. Coman. She continued painting almost to her death at age 89. Her reputation lapsed into obscurity until the mid 1970s when a renewed interest in feminine artists brought new appreciation to her work. 17 1/4" x 26 1/8"
