ULYSSE COMTOIS COULEURS D'AUTOMNE, 1988 acrylic on canvas signed; also signed, dated, and titled on the reverse 60 ins x 72 ins; 152.4 cms x 182.9 cms Provenance: Private Collection, Quebec Emblematic of the magnified pointillism found in his later painting, Couleurs d’Automne showcases Ulysse Comtois at his most expansive and iridescent. Juxtaposing strokes of bold colour come together in glinting flashes and rushed, hurried flows of energetic movement. A central cruciform radiates across the canvas, creating a turbulent lurch between heated oranges and reds and cooler shades of blue, black, and turquoise. The impression is that of blustered flurries of fallen leaves in the chill autumn breeze and the last searing heat of a dying summer sun. The vast field of colour is a singular example of Comtois’ buzzing expressionism. Estimate: $20,000–30,000

He joined the Automatistes for their last group show in 1954, but frequently found himself torn between the loose paint handling of the Automatistes and the hard-edged geometrical style of the Plasticiens. The brightly-coloured stripes in Sans-Titre echo his earlier experimentations with the theme and may have been influenced by Guido Molinari. In 1978, both Comtois and Molinari were chosen to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale.

Although Comtois is known primarily as an abstract artist, his career was characterized by exploration in myriad media and styles. As Comtois once stated, “My ideology of art is that there are no categories such as abstract art or figurative art. These are not mutually exclusive areas. On the contrary, they form one continuous area. It’s a question of degree, not of type. There are works that are more or less abstract; that’s all.”

Comtois used this technique to explore the effects created by juxtaposing strokes of contrasting colour. In 1978, the Government of Quebec awarded Comtois the prestigious Paul-Émile Borduas Prize for his contributions to the provincial and international art scenes.

In speaking of the artist’s sculptural works Lawrence Sabbath wrote, “Ulysse Comtois should have his name writ large in the history books of art, for he is one who believes that art need not be sacred, that it can be a source of fun without any loss of respect for artist or object.” This statement also resonates for the artist’s two-dimensional works. Here Comtois’ non-figurative painting creates modular forms, wherein a painterly quality is still evident – through strips and rectangles. Colour bars over a vivid background form linear juxtapositions that play with the eyes. As if mirroring the bright colours and interlocking forms of his sculptures from the same time, Comtois creates in Quatre Zones a powerful yet playful work, assertive in both its colour and its line.

Comtois studied briefly at the École des beaux-arts in Montreal (1949-50) before deciding to leave the school and to focus on his own art, inspired by the Automatistes and their 1948 manifesto, Refus global. Some of his work from that period consisted of colour bars over a background of bright colours. He participated in the last Automatistes exhibition, La matière chante, organized by Claude Gauvreau at Galerie Antoine in the spring of 1954. In 1955, he was part of the group exhibition Espace 55, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. After the demise of the Automatistes, Comtois joined the Association des artistes non-figuratifs de Montréal, an alliance of Plasticiens and Automatistes. and participated in their exhibitions from 1955 to 1959.Comtois received a Canada Council grant in 1963, allowing him to travel in Europe and Israel. By the 1960's Comtois was creating novel sculptural pieces first in wood then in metal, exhibiting his small scuptures of welded steel at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1961. In 1968, the National Gallery of Canada selected Comtois, together with Guido Molinari, to represent Canada at the 34th Venice Biennale. The NGC purchased Comtois' kinetic sculpture, Column, for its collection, a work that has been on view at the National Gallery since 1995. The piece comprises of 70 aluminum plates fitted over a steel rod with base, each of the plates independently movable through a full circle. He also produced a relief mural for the entrance of the Expo '67 Administration & News Building. Comtois returned to painting in the 1970's, his works encompassing a broad range of styles, from figurative art to colourful pointillist-like pieces, to more geometric work characterized by black grid-like structures on a monotone or patterned surface.Throughout his career, Comtois taught at several institutions, including the École des beaux-arts in Montreal (1965-70), Université du Québec à Montréal (1970-72), Université Laval, (1970-76), and Concordia University (1976-85; 1991-94). Comtois also continued to work with sculpture, and in the mid-1980s he began an ambitious series entitled the Romanesque Suite, made of wood, wax, and bronze. In this series, Comtois built each piece with layers of carefully applied modeling clay, his contact with the work and his manipulation of the clay evident on the finished surface. Comtois was awarded the Prix de la Province de Québec (1964), Canada Council Grant (1967), the prestigious Paul-Émile Borduas Prize in 1978 by the Government of Québec, and the Prix Louis-Philippe Hébert (1991). The Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal organized a comprehensive retrospective of his work in 1983. In 2012, the National Gallery held the Ulysses Comtois: Photographs exhibition, a collection Comtois' photographs of family, friends, his artworks, exhibition openings and installations.Ulysses Comtois died of cancer at the age of 68 on July 10, 1999, in Sainte-Madeleine, near Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec.Selected Corporate, Private and Public CollectionsAgnes Etherington Art Centre (Kingston, ON)Art Gallery of Hamilton (Hamilton, ON)Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto, ON)Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa, ON)Carleton University (Ottawa, ON)Claridge Collection (Montréal, QC)Concordia University (Montréal, QC)Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Montreal, QC)Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (Montreal, QC)Musée d'art de Joliette (Joliette, QC)Musée du Bas Saint-Laurent (Rivière-du-Loup, QC)Musée de Lachine (Lachine, QC)Musée Laurier (Victoriaville, QC)Musée du Mont-Saint-Hilaire (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC)Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec (Quebec City, QC)Museum London (London, ON)Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY)National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa, ON)The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa, ON)Université de Montréal (Montreal, QC)Vancouver Art Gallery (Vancouver, CB)The Winnipeg Art Gallery (Winnipeg, MN)Selected Solo and Group Exhibitions2012Ulysses Comtois (1931-1999), Winchester Galleries Modern, Victoria, BCUlysses Comtois: Photographs, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, ON 1995Ulysses Comtois, Richard Gorman, Jack Bush, York University, Toronto, ON1983Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal, QC196834th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy1966 Galerie Moos, Toronto, ON1966Galerie Edouard Smith, Paris, France1964Galerie Agnes Lefort, Montreal, QCGalerie Nova et Vetera, Collège Saint-Laurent, Montreal, QC1962Galerie Denyse Delrue, Montreal, QC1962 Dorothy Cameron, Toronto, ON1961Musee des Beaux Arts, Montreal, QC1959Galerie Artek, Montreal, QC1956Galerie l'Actuelle, Montreal,QC1954L'Echouerie, Montreal, QCSelected LinksCanadian EncyclopediaNational Gallery of Canada

Throughout his career, Comtois taught at several institutions, including the École des beaux-arts in Montreal (1965-70), Université du Québec à Montréal (1970-72), Université Laval, (1970-76), and Concordia University (1976-85; 1991-94). In 2012, the National Gallery held the Ulysses Comtois: Photographs exhibition, a collection Comtois' photographs of family, friends, his artworks, exhibition openings and installations.Ulysses Comtois died of cancer at the age of 68 on July 10, 1999, in Sainte-Madeleine, near Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec.

Ulysse Comtois 1931 -1999 Canadian metal sculpture Sans titre 16 x 10 1/4 x 8 inches 40.6 x 26 x 20.3 centimeters Literature:Pierre Theberge, Ulysse Comtois/Guido Molinari, XXXIV International Biennial Exhibition of Art, Venice, 1968, page 10 Provenance:Acquired directly from the Artist in Montreal Private Collection, Toronto Ulysse Comtois was an established painter by the early 1960s, strongly associated with the Automatist group. After experimenting off and on with 3-dimensional forms in various media, sculpture became the main focus of his work. Significant acknowledgment of Comtois's importance as a sculptor came when he was selected to represent Canada, along with Guido Molinari, at the 1968 Venice Biennial. Often playful, his sculpture was influenced by that of Arp's simple, polished forms. Pierre Theberge wrote: ".....his pieces, whose anonymous appearance gives the impression of mass production, are all cut and polished one by one. This love of his materials explains Comtois' reluctance to consider producing multiple copies of his works." This work is accompanied by a letter from the artist's long-time companion, Louise Masson, certifying that this sculpture was made by Comtois.

      Est: £600 - £700

Ulysee Comtois, French Canadian 1931-1999 - Untitled tower forms; an 'Automatiste' sculpture, constructed of three towers with grey marbled plastic movable arms, the three towers attached to a circular steel plinth base, bearing signature Comtois 69, 84cm high, base 30cm diam. Note:Some of the most inventive art made in Canada in the period 1950-80 was in the realm of sculpture, exposing sculptors to a great variety of new materials; they responded with new kinds of constructions, multimedia works, installations and site-specific inventions, along with more traditional freestanding objects. Ulysse Comtois's paintings of the 1950's reveal a search for flexible structures identifying a post automatist aesthetic. He was torn at that time between the loose paint handling evident in the work of the automatists and the emerging geometrical rigour proposed by the new cultural statement of the 'Plasticiens' movement of Montréal. The more-or-less curved bars in his series of abstract paintings done between 1954 and 1956 would find later echoes in the modular form of the strips found in his playful sculptures of the 1960s. Comtois represented Canada in the XXXIV Biennal Venice. He showed his first-rate "columns" of articulated aluminium that the viewer can "re-configure" according to ones own "automatisms."
