Overall including frame 28 inches x 28 inches Provenance: Marvin Cone to J.G. and Agatha Cherry, and descended through the family and from whom acquired by the present owner. Literature: Joseph S. The offered lot reflects the masterful skill Cone exhibited when rendering his iconic landscapes with cloud filled skies. Any rural Iowa can instantly recognize the various types of clouds and landscapes which Cone keenly captured in a manner perhaps only possible by those who lived amidst such scenery. The foreground mixed with remnants of green patches amongst various brown shades clearly reflects an early fall setting also expressed in the varicolored blue sky and wind-blown clouds which are the very essence of the fall season in rural windswept Iowa.Ê SHIPPING NOTICE: Jackson's is your sole and only source for one stop packing and shipping. MARVIN CONE (American 1891-1965) Green Door Oil on canvas Signed lower right 36 inches x 24 inches. Overall including frame 45.5 inches x 33.25 inches Provenance: Winifred Cone to Stephen Cone Weeks and Sheila Garthwaite Weeks, through whom acquired by the present owner. Literature: Joseph S. Czestochowski, Marvin D. Cone, Art as Self Portrait, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1990, page 194 as #630. Exhibition: Cedar Rapids Art Association, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Paintings by Marvin Cone, Sculpture by Edmund Whiting, May-June, 1964, as #19. And, ÊWaterloo Center for the Arts, Waterloo, Iowa, September 1971 as #8 The offered lot is a good example of Cones works comprised of interior scenes which he began in 1938. Cone remained interested with this motif for over 20 years. The offered painting exhibits the many elements Cone would include in these works; an interior devoid of human presence, a doorway to an unknown location and a quality of light and shadow that serves as a visual symbol for introspection - a retreat from the outside world. What distinguishes Cones interior paintings from similar treatment but other artists is the lack of a human figure and customary furnishings. Instead, the viewer is left in a dreamy emptiness. LARGE ORIGINAL MARVIN CONE CLOUD SCENE

          Est: $60,000 - $90,000

MARVIN CONE (American 1891-1965) Cloud Patterns - 1940 Oil on canvas Signed lower left and titled on verso in artists hand              18 inches x 34 inches Provenance A prominent private Midwest collection Throughout his work, Cone was able to distill a universal quality-poetic, romantic, and lyrical, from his surroundings.  Unlike other strict regionalists, his chief objective was to increase our capacity for perception.  A teacher at heart, Cone knew that the viewer, when looking at one of his works, would inevitably bring some personal memory to the experience, thereby increasing the impact of the painting. Throughout his life Cone concentrated on the landscape of the Midwest, capturing the special nuances of the light and the complex formations of the land and sky.  These scenes, which rarely include people, are reminiscent of the Iowa countryside but without topographic precision.  To Cone, the landscape and sky had a poignant reality that was nonetheless unpredictable and elusive.  Nature's sublimity, more than its mere physical qualities, was the principal pursuit. In the offered lot the colors are subtle and evocative in their suggestions of light, and a complex layering of forms gives depth to the to the clouds in the huge expansive sky and seamlessly merge and echo the rolling rural Iowa landscapes which surrounded him. The offered lot is a prime example of Cones works comprised of interior scenes which he began in 1938. Cone remained interested with this motif for over 20 years. The offered painting exhibits the many elements Cone would include in these works; an interior devoid of human presence, a stairway to an unknown location and a quality of light that serves as a visual symbol for introspection - a retreat from the outside world. What distinguishes Cones interior paintings from similar treatment but other artists is the lack of a human figure and customary furnishings. Instead, the viewer is left in a dreamy emptiness. The painting would also seem to reflect Cones use of ethereal images such as the image hinted at on the wall above the cat rendered of wall texture shadows and, as some suggest, depicts a shadow of Cone himself with his well-known tuff of hair - a technique employed in an earlier painting by Cone titled "Myself" 1932. The Prescence of the cat, the ‘Night Prowler" is unique to all of Cones interior paintings and perhaps an also reflection of Cone's interest in the spirit world. Ultimately, the viewer is keenly aware that the room was previously animated with human drama, and a nostalgia from this presence fills the room. When he began to paint the barns surrounding Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the late 1930s, these iconic structures were already around about a hundred years old, in a state of decline, and rapidly being replaced by modern, more efficient buildings. These scenes were usually devoid of the transient distraction of any human presence and are carefully structured and geometrically ordered. Though Marvin Cone's work is often described as Regionalist in the tradition of his lifelong friend Grant Wood, Cone avoided the cultural implications often found in the work of his contemporaries. He instead focused on subjects, including barns, that captivated his interest and presented a compositional challenge, and the potential for an interesting design that displayed his technical skill. He sought to express the essence of his surroundings, rather than an accurate copy. Cone spent his entire life as an artist working in Cedar Rapids, where he grew up, raised a family, and taught painting at the local Coe College for over forty years. Joseph S. Czestochowski writes, "... Cone concentrated on the landscape of the Midwest, capturing the special nuances of mid-western light and the complex formations of land and sky. These scenes, which rarely include people, are reminiscent of the Iowa countryside, but without topographic precision. To the artist, the landscape had a poignant reality that was nonetheless unpredictable and elusive. Nature's sublimity, greater than its mere physical qualities, was Cone's principal pursuit" (Marvin D. Cone: An American Tradition, New York, 1985, p. 1). Another version of the present painting, titled Cook's Barn No. 1, was painted in 1939-40, and was a wedding gift to his daughter and son-in-law in 1947. Cook's Barn No. 1 was sold at Sotheby's New York in May 2004.

Lot essay: A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Midwestern landscape provided Marvin Cone a wealth of source material. While often grouped with Regional artists of the 1920s and 1930s, especially as he was close friends with Grant Wood, Cone did not consider himself a Regionalist. Cone's art was not an effort to record surrounding daily life, but a blend of his values and imagination and their relationship to his unique experiences. The artist painted for himself, creating pictures that represented his own inner being. As stated by Joseph Czestochowski, 'Each of Cone's works reflects an individual moment in time and space, fixing the artist's identity within a universal context of inevitable change.' (Joseph Czestochowski, Marvin D. Cone and Grant Wood: an American Tradition, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, 1989, p. 10) From 1930 to 1937, Cone focused his gaze on the unique terrain of rural Iowa. Executed in 1934, Interval epitomizes his work from this period. The painting reveals Cone's stylized method of breaking down landscapes into layers of component parts and using color rich with light. The composition, dominated by towering cumulus clouds, is given depth through a complex layering of forms, emphasized by the scattered smaller clouds in front of the larger cloudbank and the hazy striations of cirrus clouds above and below. The rolling hills are divided into distinct bands that recede into the background. The colors overall are subtle and evocative in their suggestion of light, which seems to emit outwardly from the heaped clouds. Two birds soar together in the lower left of the composition, accentuating the wild freedom of the expansive landscape. Like many of Cone's paintings from this period, the scene is devoid of human life. The painting stands as a testament to the mysteries of nature, while also being extremely personal in its sense of solitude and tranquility. In Interval, Cone created a universal vision safe from the vagaries of time. 'The artist does not set out to imitate nature," Cone remarked. "Art traces an abstraction and makes it audible or visual. It symbolizes the whole of life' (as quoted in Cedar Rapids Gazette, January 19, 1938, p. 15, and May 26, 1938, p. 8). Perhaps the distinguished poet and Cone's close friend Paul Engle, founder of Iowa Writers' Workshop, best summarized Cone's achievements when he said in 1960, 'Marvin Cone dramatized space...He stares at the world with his hands...He has the painter's second sight, the form seen once, then again after the imagination has redefined it" ("Portrait of the Artist as Neighbor," Marvin Cone, A Retrospective Exhibition 1938-1960, Iowa City, Iowa, 1960, n.p.). This work will be included as no. 1941.006 in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work being compiled by Joseph Czestochowski and published by International Arts. We wish to thank him for his kind assistance with cataloguing the lot. For Cone, the "Old Red Iowa Barn" was an archetype whose form he explored in the fullest. He sought to capture both its iconic qualities as "…long rambling types of things with lean-tos at each end" as well each barn's individual "personalities." (1). In this way, they are portraits as much as quintessential Iowan landscapes, and such anthropomorphic titles as Old Timer reflect this. Cone based his barn paintings upon actual barns in Linn County beginning in the late 1930s, when many were already approaching one hundred years of age and in a state of decline. By 1960, Cone recognized their endangered status, lamenting, "I'd still paint good old Iowa barns if I could find one, but it seems like the farmers are all painting them white. In fact, the only barn I know of that's still standing since I painted it is somewhere around Toddville…and I haven't seen it for a number of years." (2) In this sense, Cone's barn paintings which he created primarily through the 1940s document Linn County's agricultural life in the face of modernization. The present work was one of three submissions to the Directions in American Painting exhibit held October 23 to December 14, 1941 at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, but another work was ultimately selected. (3) Subsequently, the work was delivered to the William MacBeth Galleries for exhibition and lent to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their month-long show, On the Bright Side. (4) Reginald B. Figge acquired the work after the March 1947 Davenport Municipal Art Gallery exhibit and likely before 1950. (5) Figge worked in finance as a member of the Chicago Stock Exchange, and as director of Bankers Dispatch Corporation, a multi-state armored transportation company. (6) He descended from the prominent Figge family of Swiss-Iowan bankers, and was the brother of V.O. Figge, founder of the Davenport Bank and Trust Company and benefactor to the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. 1) "Marvin Cone-A Career of Guidance." The Cedar Rapids Gazette.
