Paul Cox (1941-2019) was the driving force behind Duck & Dolphin Antiques, started his treasured collection in Manhattan in 1963. He would eventually move his shop several times through New Jersey, the new Hope Pennsylvania area, and finally Key West Florida. He saw many styles and movements come and go. There was not one he was not an enthusiast of. Growing up in the era of “populux,” he got his start as a dealer in the art nouveau revival of the 1960s under the tutelage of the great Lillian Nassau. He went on to dealing in the highest quality of French period antiques.

(Providence 1912–1998 Milan) Untitled, c. 1948, oil on panel, 66.2 x 82 cm, framed This Work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity released by The William G. Congdon Foundation Provenance: Private Collection, Venice Private Collection, Rome From the second half of the Forties when William Congdon had moved to New York City, cities became the leit motif of his painting. New York had gained an artistic culture that was as stimulating as that of Paris in the Twenties. While in New York, he met Betty Parsons and had his first one man show at her gallery in 1949. Only a few years later he exhibited at the Whitney Museum. Congdon had become one of the leading artists in the United States and attained an international reputation as abstract expressionist. He soon started traveling ending up in Venice where he befriended Peggy Guggenheim, another of his well known collectors. He chose Venice as his home for almost ten years. Venice was a place he had visited with his family when he was a child and where he had the chance of admiring the great Renaissance painters of that area as well as more contemporary artists like Turner and Monet who had depicted this extraordinary subject. The tragedies of the war, the rejection of the American dream and of the material played an important role in his decision to spend time in Venice. The great quality of his views of Venice was soon recognized in the United States, this painting executed at the end of the Forties is an example of this known series of works. Quote: “Inextricably linked in the annals of art history, neither Peggy Guggenheim nor Betty Parsons possessed a head for business, yet their respective galleries, which showcased the most radical new talent in America, may be considered the progenitors of Abstract Expressionism or, more aptly, the New York School.” Susan Davison, Feminism for the Most Masculine: how two women launched an art market- in Abstract Expressionism, London Royal Academy of Arts 24-9-2016, 2-1-2017 p. 86

      Dec. 17, 2021

William Congdon (1912 - 1998) SENZA TITOLO olio su tavola, cm 93x64 1956 Sigla

      Est: €10,000 - €14,000

William Congdon (1912 - 1998) SENZA TITOLO olio su tavola, cm 93x64 1956 Sigla "WC" e anno "56" in basso a sinistra. (c)

Work is titled "Cambodia." We would like to thank Mr. Edoardo Berardi of Rimini, Italy, noteworthy historian of the artist's life and work, for providing the following statement about this work: "In the summer of 1960 Peggy Guggenheim organized a personal exhibition at her home (now the Guggenheim Museum in Venice) with recent works by Congdon. There are no catalogs for this exhibition, there are no lists for this exhibition, there are no photographs. It was a private exhibition of the collector for his numerous friends. It is very probable that this painting was present as it was painted in the Venice studio at that time. At the end of the exhibition, Congdon gave Peggy a painting, a "Cambodia" that is still in the Guggenheim Museum in Venice. I found two other exhibitions where the work was exhibited: Fellowship Annual Exhibit of oil paintings, sculpture, watercolors & graphic, (March 10- April 9, 1961), Philadelphia; William Congdon Paintings from the Fifties., (April 4- 30, 1991), Bill Bace Gallery, New York." Provenance: New York/Florida estate | Palm Beach Modern Auctions 2.8.2020 auction, lot 153 | Private Collection, West Palm Beach, Florida.
