A Rare & Important Regency Skeleton Clock with extreme detached escapement, invented by Congreve [Two other skeleton clocks by Sir William Congreve are in The Royal Collection; a floor standing clock circa 1800, and a table clock, both executed by John Moxon and later altered by Charles Frodsham]. • WILLIAM CONGREVE ESQ. A VERY RARE LATE GEORGE III DETACHED ESCAPEMENT REGULATOR CLOCK
        Jan. 07, 2022

WILLIAM CONGREVE ESQ. A VERY RARE LATE GEORGE III DETACHED ESCAPEMENT REGULATOR CLOCK

        Est: £15,000 - £25,000

WILLIAM CONGREVE ESQ. A VERY RARE LATE GEORGE III DETACHED ESCAPEMENT REGULATOR CLOCK WILLIAM CONGREVE ESQ. A VERY RARE LATE GEORGE III DETACHED ESCAPEMENT REGULATOR CLOCK sitting atop a rectangular mahogany podium with canted reeded corners and a lockable rectangular trunk door, the extremely large and heavy movement is protected by a delicate mahogany strung, curved and glazed lift-off cover. The movement has large, curved-top plates which together with the dial plate are arranged in a rafter style and are joined by 10 double tapered pillars, central to the plates and dial are large circular apertures which give a fascinating view of the movement which itself is weight driven with CongreveÕs extreme detached escapement which impulses the pendulum every two seconds. The dial which is in the style of a classical temple facade is engraved ÒPatent Extreme Detached escapement Invented by Wm. Congreve Esq.Ó and features two intersected silvered and engraved dials, the upper dial with a single hand reading double 0-60 seconds with batons at 2-second intervals, the lower dial has two hands reading against batons for minutes and Roman numerals for hours. This clock is a very significant find, being the most complete of CongreveÕs surviving one-second pendulum clocks and the only one known outside of the Royal collection - A previously unknown and recently discovered longcase pedestal clock by the inventor of the Congreve rocket. Only two others are known and they are both in the Royal Collection, one in Buckingham Palace and the other in St. JamesÕs Palace where they are noted in the Palace records as Òthe troublesome clockÓ. Both were radically altered by Frodsham and Vulliamy who converted them to chronometer escapements. They retain their double tapered pillars and rafter plate appearance, but all traces of the unique pendulum support and detached escapement are absent. The extreme detached escapement clocks were made for Congreve by James Moxon and all are of rafter type construction with his signature double tapered pillars and ÒHarrisonÓ type screws. Clock Number 3, as we call it, came from a hunting lodge in Eastern Europe and it would be exciting to speculate that it could have been a Royal gift, as Congreve supplied, almost exclusively, George III and his son, the Prince of Wales

        Est: £10,000 - £15,000

CONGREVE, William (1772-1828). The Details of the Rocket System: Shewing the Various Applications of this Weapon, both for Sea and for Land Service, and its Diferent Uses in the Field and in Sieges. London: printed by J. Whiting, 1814. The frst edition, with hand-coloured plates depicting the frst modern European war rockets. 'The rockets’ red glare; the bombs bursting in air,' immortalized by Francis Scott Key in the American national anthem describe specifcally the Congreve rockets which assailed Fort McHenry in September 1814. Congreve invested his own money in developing these solidfuel, iron-cased missiles. Reverse-engineered from Indian Mysorean rockets, his invention greatly increased the range and maneuverability over any European rocket to date. They were used in trials by the Royal Navy beginning in late 1805, but met with limited success at the start and were not adopted more widely until 1813 when the frst 'Rocket Brigades' were commissioned and this book became necessary for oficer training. This frst edition, published contemporaneously to the formation of the Rocket Brigades and intended for their use, is very rare. The most recent copy sold at auction was the Honeyman copy, in 1988. Not in Abbey or Tooley. Ogilby Trust Index 192. Oblong folio (270 x 422mm). 12 hand-coloured engraved plates on wove paper, without watermarks or with watermarks dated 1809 or 1811, the plates numbered in a combination of engraving and manuscript (the uncoloured plate 13 supplied in facsimile, title-page creased and repaired, long repaired tear to text for plate 7, occasional minor soiling). Contemporary calf ruled in gilt (rebacked to style).
