JOHN CONNELL was an important member of the Santa Fe arts community during the 1970s, best known for the raw, earthen quality of his paper and wire sculptures and unconventional paintings. Connell was influenced by the works of Hokusai, Rembrandt, Balzac, Dante, Giacometti and de Kooning. Elements of Buddhusm and the Japanese wabi-sabi are also consistent themes throughout Connell's ouevre. Connell was born in 1940 in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Brown University, the Art Students League, and New York University where he studied Chinese printmaking. He went on to join the Santa Fe artists group "Nerve" and there garnered much praise for his large-scale installations.
