        § Olive Cook (British, 1912-2002) Self-portrait under the apple tree oil on canvas board h:62 w:75 cm Other Notes: Other Notes: Olive Cook was an artist, historian and writer, born in Cambridge on 20 February 1912 and educated at Perse School for Girls and Newnham College, where she studied modern languages. After working at the National Gallery, she began painting and after the war she wrote the publications 'Suffolk' (1948), 'Cambridgeshire: aspects of a county' (1953), and 'Breckland' (1956) about the surrounding countryside. In 1954 Olive married the photographer and architect Edwin Smith and together they produced publications around English architecture; Smith's photographs complimenting Cook's in depth historical writing. Olive and Edwin moved to Saffron Walden in 1962, first living on the corner of Audley Road and East Street, and later into the Coach House at the Vineyards on Windmill Hill. Together the couple provided the driving force behind the idea of creating an Arts Centre in Saffron Walden, using the old Maltings in Gold Street, and initiated a special fund towards the project. The project was then moved to the Corn Exchange, providing funds and resources for the town's Art Centre. However the Centre lost the support of the council, and was closed in 2000. Olive was an environmental campaigner for most of her life, for instance protesting the impact of Stansted Airport in her book 'The Stansted Affair' (1967). She also worked to protect the architecture and community of Saffron Walden; she was responsible for protecting the Corn Exchange, Barclays Bank, the Town Hall and the General Hospital in London Road from re-development. Olive was one of the founding members of the Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden, and wrote 'The North West Essex Collection: an Introduction' (1988), a survey of the artists represented in the collection at the Fry Art Gallery.
