Robert Cook (Boston/Italy, 1921-2017) was an American sculptor who moved to Italy after World War II. He passed away in early March, 2017. During his lifetime, Cook achieved worldwide fame as an "artist who can capture motion in fluid bronze." Born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1921, Cook studied with the classical sculptor George Demetrios. His sculpting career was put on hold, however, when the United States entered World War II, whereupon he took up service in U.S. Army Corps of Engineering as a map and model maker. After the conclusion of the war, Cook moved to Paris to study with Marcel Gaumont at L’Academie des Beaux Arts; and later, in 1948, he moved to Rome with a Fulbright Grant for more advanced study. Cook was an innovator in the “lost wax” process of casting, creating sculptures that were larger than had previously been possible. Cook has been honored with prizes from the Prix de Rome, the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Tiffany Foundation.             Robert Cook (1921-2017), Moving Dancer bronze, signed "R. Cook," circa 1970, mounted to a free-form hardwood plinth inscribed with the title to the underside. 13.5 x 29.5 x 7.5 in. (including plinth) Born in Boston, Robert Cook moved to Rome in 1948. It was in Italy that Cook developed a unique and exacting technique for the lost wax process of bronze sculpting. Cook was the recipient of numerous awards over the course of his long career, including the Prix de Rome, a grant from the Tiffany Foundation, and a Fulbright Commission.             Badger and Weasels, Wind in the Willows (author Kenneth Grahame) sgn. l.l. R. Cook, lost wax casting, verdigris patina, 29” diam. This work was artist commissioned by the consignor’s parents, close friends of the artist. It hung on the covered porch in their Bermuda home for years. Cook lived and worked in Rome most of his life. He worked in a lost wax method of casting, and was an innovator in that method by creating larger pieces than had previously been possible. The Taylor Graham Gallery in New York has recently had an exhibition of Cook’s work.
