Timothy Cook Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1958 -

Aboriginal artist, Timothy Cook began exhibiting his work in the late 1990's in group shows around Australia including Darwin, Melbourne, Alice Springs and Perth.

His work depicts the body designs used in the Pukamani ceremony, the traditional Tiwi burial ceremony, one of the cornerstones of the Tiwi's traditional belief.

His art is also closely linked to stories of Purrukuparli, the Tiwi mythological ancestor and is characterised by a geometric structure of lines and dots with every line and marking having an important meaning. These geometric patterns, common in all Tiwi art, often depict sites of stories of mythological significance involving ancestors who were changed into animals or birds. Each Tiwi artist has their own individual interpretation of the designs.

        Timothy Cook - Kulama, 2010

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Born 1958 on Melville Island, Timothy Cook began painting in the mid 1990s. At the start of his career he was one of a number of Tiwi artists who visited the South Australian Museum in Adelaide to view the bark paintings collected by anthropologist Charles Mountford during his National Geographic expedition to Melville Island in 1954. The visiting artists were inspired to create contemporary responses and Cook quickly became one of the most radical interpreters of these early Tiwi works. The traditional Tiwi ceremony of kulama (or yam) is a recurrent subject in Cook’s work, and its circular motif has several echoes in Tiwi culture. This ceremony is a coming-of-age ritual that occurs when the kulama yams are harvested. It is performed in the early dry season around a circular fire-pit when a conspicuous halo appears around the full moon.Elders of both sexes sing and dance for three days welcoming the boys into adulthood. The boy is then renamed with his true man's name. The moon is a potent metaphor for life and death in the Tiwi Islands. It is home to the adulterous Tapara from the Tiwi mortuary narrative of Pukumani, which also features Purukapali, his wife Waiyai, and their baby son Jinani. Timothy Cook was a finalist in the National Aboriginal Art Awards (NATSIA) on six occasions prior to 2010, and selected as a finalist in numerous other national art prizes before winning the NATSIA in 2012. He is renowned for paintings in natural earth pigment characterised by loose, gestural, spacious designs. These are composed with pure instinct and without hesitation.

The Pukumani ceremony is held on the land of the deceased to ensure the Mopadidi(the spirit of the deceased) returns to its country and continues its journey to another life. Large solid hardwood poles – tutini – are assembled around the ceremonial site as monuments to the deceased. At the end of the ceremony, tunga, stitched bark baskets, are placed over the top of the tutini – an act akin to candle stoppers snuffing the light of life. The tutini and tunga are left in place at the end of the ceremony – eventually burnt by bushfire, eaten by termites and eroded by water and wind. This is the last earthly physical reminder of the deceased, until it is reclaimed by the country, together with their wandering spirit. No other living artist has Cook’s ability to animate these massive ironwood and bloodwood poles and folded stringybark buckets into seemingly spirited forms. The very act of painting his bold, gestural marks on these massive sculpted forms gives Cook’s tutini a sense of movement. They are completely transformed as they seemingly come to life, themselves central ceremonial figures, guiding the spirits of the deceased into their spirit world.
