(Cochin China) London. Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, Paternoster Row. , dec. 1, 1810". A group of natives in different clothes and headdresses under palm trees, in the background some houses and a river. George Cooke (London 1781 - London 1834) was a British engraver and son of the German confectioner Johann Bernhard Guck (later Cooke) from Frankfurt am Main. Apprenticed to James Basire, later drawing teacher at a girls' boarding school. He engraved after numerous works of William Turner and published together with his brother William Bernard C. 1814-26 Picturesque Views of the Southern Coast of England, which had a lasting influence on the English taste of the time.         Scenery of the East India Islands, Etc. A Series of Views of the most Remarkable Localities, celebrated for Picturesque Beauty or Historical and other Associations. [London: Longman, Hurst, plates dated 1811-1813.] [2 leaves] + 26 engraved plates. Oblong folio (216 x 273 mm). Original printed wrappers. Lower margin with 3 small wormholes, small dampstain affecting outer margin on about 8 plates, some soiling and fraying to wrappers. Rare collection of South Seas views engraved by George Cooke. These engravings were later used to illustrate Pinkerton’s comprehensive Best and Most Interesting Voyages and Travels, but this separate, advance publication is surprisingly rare. Includes views of Tahiti, Hawaii, New Zealand, New Guinea and the Marquesas, and has a fine view of Sydney and the mouth of the Parramatta River after the French artist Charles Alexandre Lesueur. Not in the standard bibliographies. Only one copy appears in ABPC since 1976. See illustration.

Locker. (Some plates with faint vertical stain touching sky area.) Blue morocco gilt by Bayntun Riviere, with original wrappers bound in (a few light stains to upper wrapper and lower cover). Provenance: Christie's, 24 November 1982, lot 236. A RARE SET OF ENGRAVINGS AFTER EARLY VIEWS OF THE PACIFIC, several taken from the third voyage of James Cook. The fine impressions include an early View of Sydney and the Mouth of the Parramatta, after an original drawing by Charles Alexandre Lesueur, now in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle du Havre Collection (16063-1), and published in F. Péron's Voyage of 1807, and a view of the town of St James in St Helena, with ships from the East India Company entering the bay in the foreground.
