    • William Cubitt Cooke - 'Who is that lovely Creature?', Illustration to Fanny Burney's 'Evelina'
      Feb. 27, 2024

William Cubitt Cooke - 'Who is that lovely Creature?', Illustration to Fanny Burney's 'Evelina'

      Est: £100 - £200

William Cubitt Cooke,  British 1866-1951 'Who is that lovely Creature?', Illustration to Fanny Burney's 'Evelina';  pen, ink, and black wash heightened with white on paper, signed and dated 'W. CUBITT COOKE. 92' (lower left), and bears later inscribed label to the reverse, identifying the scene, 16.2 x 11.2 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Cooke was a prominent and prolific illustrator who produced illustrations for several publications, such as the 1893 Dent edition of Fanny Burney's (1752-1840) 'Evelina'. 'Evelina' is often regarded as a seminal work of English literature, with its satire of 18th-century manners and society heavily influencing the work of Jane Austen (1775-1817), whose complete novels Cooke also provided illustrations for.  The present work is described as an illustration to Volume 1, letter 23 in Fanny Burney's Evelina, in which the title character describes an interaction with an unnamed Lord at a tea room. The scene is rendered particularly atmospheric through Cooke's strong contrast of light and dark, with the single candle on the table somewhat illuminating the dark and oppressive walls beyond.
