KLEOPATRA Öl auf Leinwand, auf Holz. 122,5 x 61 cm. Rechts unten signiert „J. Coomans 1877“. Vor einem steinernen Gebäude mit Durchblick die Ganzkörperdarstellung der schönen nackten, halb knienden Kleopatra nach rechts mit langen schwarzen Haaren und gold-türkisem Kopfschmuck in Form eines Vogels. Ihre Oberarme jeweils mit einem breiten Reifen verziert, in der linken Hand einen langen Stab mit Blütendekor haltend. Ihr Blick ist voller Konzentration nach rechts gerichtet, vorbei an einem großen rötlichen Paradiesvogel. Im Hintergrund links unten die Pyramide von Gizeh und die Sphinx im warmen gelblichen Licht des Himmels, der nach oben in einen hellblauen Ton übergeht. Im Vordergrund des Bodenbereichs zudem Platten mit ägyptischen Schriftzeichen erkennbar. Harmonische, ruhig wirkende Darstellung, die Schönheit Kleopatras dabei besonders hervorgehoben. Anmerkung: Der Künstler war ein bekannter Maler und Illustrator. Seine drei Aufenthalte in Algerien (1843, 1844, 1845) führten den Orientalismus in sein Werk ein, wobei er sich zunächst auf nordafrikanische Landschaften, arabische Portraits und algerische Tänzer konzentrierte. Später entwickelte er Portraits mit exotischen Kostümen, Schmuck und dunklem sinnlichen Stil, die von europäischen Sammlern sehr geschätzt wurden. (1350661) (1) (18)

Signed and dated lower left: Joseph Coomans. 1856 The Belgian history and genre painter Pierre Joseph Coomans was commissioned by Queen Louise-Marie of Orleans to follow the French army in Algeria in 1843-45, where he met the military painter Horace Vernet. In 1854 and 1855 he served General Aimable Pélissier in the Crimean War as a military painter. During this period, Coomans painted both Orientalist-style paintings with Algerian motifs and battle scenes, which he exhibited successfully at international salons. In 1848 he received an award in Brussels for his painting 'Attila's Last Charge on the Plains of Châlons-Sur-Marne', which was subsequently shown in Berlin and Bremen. In 1855 he sold a large painting "Battle of the Alma" (Crimean War), which he exhibited in London. The present work "Roman Attack on the Usipetes and Tencteri" was exhibited in Paris in 1857. The large-format composition from 1856 can be understood as the conclusion and climax of Coomans' first creative period as a history and battle painter. In 1856 Coomans married and moved to Naples, where, under the influence of the art of Pompeii, he turned to genre and narrative paintings set in antiquity in the Neo-Pompeian style. Cooman's rich experience with oriental and military motifs flows into the dramatic depiction of the unequal battle between Romans and Germanic tribes. Through a subtle use of tone and colour and the targeted use of light and shadow, Coomans creates an atmospheric mood of Wagnerian proportions. The desperate resistance of the tribe ends at the riverbank, to which women and children flee. Coomans' account follows Caesar's description of the event in De Bello Gallico fairly closely (see Gaius Julius Caesar, De Bello Gallico, Book 4, Chapter 1, 13-15). In 55 BC, Caesar had eight legions encircle and massacre 200,000 Tenkterians and Usipeterians at the mouth of the Meuse and Waal rivers near Kessel and Heerwarden in the province of Gelderland (NL) when they asked for permission to settle in the river delta. The two Germanic tribes had previously left their ancestral settlement area on the right bank of the Lower Rhine, as they had been displaced by their neighbours, the Suebi. Caesar's Germanic policy was aimed at defending the Rhine border of the Imperium Romanum and preventing an uncontrollable influx of Germanic warriors into the Germanic regions on the left bank of the Rhine and ultimately securing Gaul.

Antikes Familien-Symposion Öl auf Leinwand. 83,7 x 127,5 cm. Ungerahmt. Künstlerbezeichnung auf einer Fußsohle der linken unteren Ecke. Der Maler erhielt seine erste Ausbildung an der Akademie in Antwerpen bei De Keyser und Gustave Wappers. Sein Interesse an orientalischen, dann vor allem antiken Themen resultierte aus seinen Kriegsaufenthalten in Algerien, Italien, der Türkei und Griechenland. Sein Besuch der Ausgrabungen in Pompeji 1857 hat wesentlich auf seine Malerei gewirkt. Dies zeigt auch das vorliegende Gemälde: In einem geräumigen antiken Innenraum, mit Ausblick links in das hell erleuchtete Atrium mit Säulen, hat sich die Familie mit Freunden versammelt. Auf erhöhten und gepolsterten Klinen liegen drei Männer verschiedenen Alters, der Hausherr durch seinen Efeukranz hervorgehoben. Die Patrona des Hauses, weiß gekleidet, am Tischhaupt in einem Lehnstuhl. Mädchen musizieren mit Doppel-Aulis und Tamburin. Im Vordergrund Kinder auf einem Pantherfell, das symbolisch auf den Dionysoskult verweist. Solche Symposien sind aus der griechisch-römischen Kultur als Festgelage nach dem Essen mit Wein, Musik und Kultgesängen überliefert. Der Raumhintergrund zeigt die Kenntnis des Malers von den Wandmalereien Pompejis deutlich. Ein kleineres Gemälde, das dem vorliegenden entspricht (56 x 84 cm), kam mit dem Titel „Roman Banquet, 1876“ in den Handel. Coomans hatte vor allem in den USA großen Erfolg. Auch die Töchter des Malers, Diana (1861-1952) und Heva Coomans (1864-1939), setzten das Malerhandwerk in den USA fort. Am Boden, in origineller Weise, neben einer attischen Vase ein Spielzeug in Form einer Schildkröte, die ein kleines Wägelchen zieht. A pair of late 19th/ early 20th century hand colored lithographs comprising of "La Voix De La Mern - The Voice of the Sea" depicting classical Roman women in robes atop a mountain beside a columned structure; and "Chants du Ciel - Nature's Songs" depicting two classical Roman women in patterned drapery sitting in a tree in front of a columned rotunda. Each inscribed within plate lower left "Coomans Pinx" and lower right "Barry Lith", imprinting and publication details at bottom referencing Lemercier in Paris, France. Framed 32" x 26", unframed sight size 25" x 18.75".
