          Joseph Teal Cooper,  English 1682-1743-  A still life of melon, pears, plums and grapes on a stone ledge, a landscape beyond;  oil on canvas, signed 'JTeal. Cooper.' (upper centre), 63.6 x 76.2 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, Sweden.  Note:  Cooper has been described as the first significant professional native painter of fruit and flower still lifes in England. The similarity of his work to that of Neapolitan painters Luca Forte (c.1615-c.1670), Paolo Porpora (1616-1673) and Abraham Brueghel (1631-1697) has fuelled suggestions that he received some training in Naples. His paintings, especially signed examples, are rare to come on to the market and only one attributed work (an unsigned still life at Plas Newydd, Anglesey) is in any public collection in the United Kingdom. The present work is a particularly charming example of his oeuvre, with fruit which is so ripe and verdant that it almost opalesces in the light.

Containing an abstract of some rare and rich unpublished receipts of cookery, first edition, 3 small woodcuts of pie shapes in text, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, title with lower corner cut away, with loss to imprint (including date), and laid down (not obscuring any text verso), H4 (signed H5) with repair at foot, obscuring a couple of letters, last few ff. little chipped / closely trimmed, some foxing, stained, lightly browned throughout, 20th century cloth-backed marbled boards, computer printed paper label to spine, [Oxford p.25; Wing C6055], 12mo, Printed by J.G. for R. Lowndes at the White-lyon in St. Paul's Church-yard, neer the West end, [1654]. ⁂ Rare, with ESTC recording BL and Bodleian copies only, and no copies being added by WorldCat. An extensive little work, which deals with all manner of savoury and sweet dishes, including a number of pies and tarts. Provenance: 'Barbara Newton' (early ink name to head of A2).

The artist was recorded with approval by George Vertue in September 1739, '...Cooper who lives at Lambeth has arrivd to great skill and perfection in painting fruit and flowers in the manner of Michael Angel de Caravagio. Baptists. & c. with a strong & free pencil which has a fine effect in that kind of Painting...' (see 'George Vertue's Notebooks', Walpole Society, Vol.XXII, p.95).
