      • After Samuel Cooper (c.1609-72). Portrait miniature of King Charles II. English, 18th century.
        Mar. 21, 2024

After Samuel Cooper (c.1609-72). Portrait miniature of King Charles II. English, 18th century.

        Est: €3,500 - €3,750

Contained within it’s original ebony veneered frame. The example from the Royal Collection Trust bears the following description: ‘Charles II had learned of Samuel Cooper's reputation whilst in exile and lost no time in sitting to Cooper soon after his return to London following the Restoration in 1660. John Aubrey describes how within weeks of 'his majestie's happy returne', Charles II went to Cooper's studio, where 'as he sate for his picture, he was diverted by Mr. Hobbes's pleasant discourse'. Cooper's role as court limner was made official with his appointment in 1663 and the king's high regard for Cooper's work is born out by the lengths to which he went to secure the remaining pieces left in Cooper's studio after the artist's death in 1672, offering a considerable pension of £200 p.a. to Cooper's widow, Christiana.’ Measures: 8 x 6.7cm and 14 x 12.5 cm including frame.

SAMUEL COOPER,  ENGLISH 1609-1672-  A PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF A YOUNG GENTLEMAN, WEARING GILT-EDGED A

        Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Samuel Cooper,  English 1609-1672-  A portrait miniature of a young gentleman, wearing gilt-edged armour and lawn collar, circa 1645;  watercolour on vellum in a later gilt-metal frame with spiral cresting, the reverse with engraved decoration, oval, 6.4 cm. high.  Provenance:  Harold Ward Collection, Manthorpe House, Grantham.  with Philip Mould, London.  Note:  This portrait probably represents a young parliamentarian, wearing the lawn collar and plain armour of Cromwell's commanders (see, for example, a portrait of General Henry Ireton after Cooper [Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge no.3828] or General George Fleetwood [National Portrait Gallery no.1925] also painted during the 1640s). The sitter's animated expression (and rather avant-garde hairstyle) sit somewhat at a contrast to the seriousness of purpose indicated by his protective armour. Painted relatively early in Cooper's independent career as an artist, the influence of Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) is clear in the dramatic but sombre tones of the portrait, and in the naturalistic representation of the sitter's features. Van Dyck's inspiration for the young artist is most evident in Cooper's self-portrait of 1645 [Royal Collection RCIN 420067], close in date to the present work. The present work is close to Cooper's earliest dated portrait of 1642, the year in which he opened his independent studio, working separately from his uncle and instructor John Hoskins Senior (c.1590-1665). 1642 also saw the start of the battles which were to define the English Civil War and to some extent Cooper's career. His political neutrality served him well and he was able to paint both Royalists and Parliamentarians, bestowing both sides with equal humanity in his small likenesses. Such miniatures would have become particularly precious for families who lost loved ones in the bloody battles fought all over the country. Cooper's meticulous observational powers, and his insistence on up to eight sittings from patrons in his London studio, left a legacy of some of the most honest depictions in the history of British portraiture.

(1798 - 1876) Confederate major general who was the highest-ranking officer in the Confederate army. He served as Inspector General in Richmond throughout the war and fled with Jefferson Davis when the capital fell. War date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Richmond, June 29, 1861, to Gen. Henry A. Wise (1806-1876), Confederate brigadier general and later Governor of Virginia, regarding troop movements. In part: '...In respect to so much of your letter as relates to the force under Colonel Tompkins in companies mustered into the state volunteer service, and which you ask to be mustered into your legion, I am instructed today that as those companies living within the district of your command must necessarily come under your orders, they need not be remustered into the force authorized...If however any questions arise which might render it important to attach them by a special muster to your legion, you are fully authorized...Every effort is being made to send forward troops for your command as fast as they are raised...' Partly inlaid to a larger sheet, minor ink show through, else fine condition. Accompanied by an engraving of Cooper. Wise's Legion was initially comprised of three regiments, later designated as 46th Virginia Infantry, 59th Virginia Infantry and 60th Virginia Infantry, forming the infantry component to which others were added. The cavalry regiment became the 10th Virginia Cavalry while the legion also had at least one battery (Hale's) of artillery.

Follower of Samuel Cooper (1609-1672) Follower of Samuel Cooper (1609-1672) Portrait of Colonel Hampden, wearing armour oil on canvas 50 x 35cm, in an ebonised frame with oval mount Colonel John Hampden (1595-1643) was an English landowner and Member of Parliament, whose opposition to arbitrary taxes imposed by Charles I - perhaps not surprising, as he was also a first cousin of Oliver Cromwell - made him a national figure. He was an ally of John Pym, the Parliamentary leader, and one of the five Members of Parliament who the king attempted to arrest in January 1642, thus igniting the First English Civil War. After war began in August 1642, Hampden raised an infantry regiment, but died of wounds received at the Battle of Chalgrove Field, Oxfordshire, on 18 June 1643. His death was considered a serious blow, as he was one of the few Parliamentary leaders able to keep the different factions together, but his bravery and integrity were long remembered. An attribution has been suggested to Sir Peter Lely, from the 1650s.
