        ARTHUR COPPEDGE (1938 - 2010) Portrait of a Young Woman. Oil on canvas, circa 1970. 610x460 mm; 24x18 inches. Signed in ink, stretcher bar verso. Provenance: estate of the artist, New York. New York figurative painter Arthur Coppedge worked closely with his community, both as an artist and educator. A graduate of Brooklyn College, Pratt Institute and the Brooklyn Museum Art School, he also taught at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Coppedge was appointed to the Board of the New York State Council of the Humanities, and helped found the Brooklyn Artists Coalition. He exhibited widely in New York and nationally in the 1970s and '80s, including at the Museum of Modern Art, ACA Galleries, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

        ARTHUR COPPEDGE (1938 - 2010) R.K.O. Bushwick (Brooklyn, NY). Oil on canvas, circa 1970. 211x262 mm; 8 3/8x10 3/8 inches. Signed in oil, lower right. Provenance: estate of the artist, New York. New York figurative painter Arthur Coppedge worked closely with his community, both as an artist and educator. A graduate of Brooklyn College, Pratt Institute and the Brooklyn Museum Art School, he also taught at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. At the corner of Broadway and Howard Streets in Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood stands the RKO Bushwick Theatre. Originally a vaudeville house when it opened in 1911, the venue then became a movie theater, and later, a church. In 2004, it was reopened as the Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology, with most of the exterior ornate terracotta architecture preserved.
