          The vibrant food culture of the city has been recorded in Daniel Coquilla’s brightly colored canvases. His memorable compositions feature local street scenes that are derived from everyday life, rendered using a unique top view perspective. Hopia refers to a popular Filipino pastry with a flaky crust introduced by Fujian immigrants. Daniel “Dansoy” Coquilla attended the University of the Philippines (UP), College of Fine Arts in 1990 and received the UP Gawad Chanselor para sa Sining Biswal in 1996. He received two Juror’s Choice awards in the 1997 Philip Morris Philippine and ASEAN Art Awards, and has also won Grand Prize and Juror’s Choice in the Art Association of the Philippines Annual Painting Competitions, as well as a finalist in the Metrobank and Shell National Painting Competitions. He was a Finalist to the Winsor & Newton World-Wide Millennium Painting Competition. In 2006, the Cultural Centre of the Philippines gave him a Thirteen Artists Award. He has held 18 solo exhibitions in the Philippines, Singapore, and participated in over 10 group shows. His works are in private and public collections, including the Singapore Art Museum.

He garnered two Jurorês Choice awards in the 1997 Philip Morris Philippine and ASEAN Art Awards, and has also been Grand Prize and Jurorês Choice winner in AAP Competitions, as well as a finalist in the Metrobank and Shell National Painting Competitions. Dansoy was a Philippine Finalist to the Windsor & Newton World-Wide Millenium Painting Competition. In 2006, he was made a Thirteen Artists wardee by the Cultural Centre of the Philippines."

          Featuring at Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers for the first time, Daniel Coquilla is a Filipino figurative artist whose interest in comics has influenced his artistic style greatly. One of his trademarks is a group of figures illustrated in a midst of activity while gazing upwards, evident in this piece titled Mahjong.
