      • MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET, ARA,  BRITISH 1850-1902-  BOATS MOORED UPON A SHORE AT SUNSET;  OIL ON PANE
        Mar. 29, 2023

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET, ARA,  BRITISH 1850-1902-  BOATS MOORED UPON A SHORE AT SUNSET;  OIL ON PANE

        Est: £1,500 - £2,500

Matthew Ridley Corbet, ARA,  British 1850-1902-  Boats moored upon a shore at sunset;  oil on panel, signed 'M R Corbet' (lower right), with an oil study of trees verso, 15.9 x 38.9 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection.  Note:  Corbet studied under Alexander Davis Cooper (1820-1895) and Frederic Leighton (1830-1896). It was likely Leighton who introduced Corbet to Giovanni Costa (1826-1903). Costa, who had similarly enlightened Leighton’s attitude towards landscape painting, was father of the school of painters known as the Etruscans, which was founded in 1878. The group, which included William Blake Richmond (1842-1921) and George Howard (1843-1911), sought inspiration from the beauty of the Tuscan landscape. According to Christopher Newall, 'the essential principle of Etruscan painting is concerned with the careful distillation of sentiment, that quality which moves a painter to the emotional rendition of a subject or association in a painting with which a viewer may identify or sympathise' (Christopher Newell, 'The Etruscans: Painters of the Italian Landscape 1850-1900', exh. cat., 1989, p.16).  The present work is executed in the landscape format which the artist often adopted, and which was favoured by the Etruscan School. The scene is a typically far-reaching landscape stretching into the horizon, with a sense of distance emphasised by the hazy blues of the mountains beyond. The golden light of the setting sun exudes a sense of romance, alongside a feeling of stillness, with the boats pulled up onto the shore, ready for the coming night. The artist travelled in Italy and the present work bears certain similarities to his large canvas 'Afterglow in Italy – Evening' (Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston no.PRSMG:P86), which was presumably painted around the same time.

      • MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902 AN ALPINE VIEW
        Oct. 06, 2021

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902 AN ALPINE VIEW

        Est: £600 - £800

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902 AN ALPINE VIEW Inscribed with initials verso, oil on paper laid down on canvas; and a companion, a pair, also mounted within the same frame (9cm x 20.5cm (3.5in x in) each) Qty: (2) Note: These two small studies mounted together most probably depict Alpine landscapes. They were painted on individual sheets of paper subsequently laid on canvas. The initials “M.R.C.” inscribed in charcoal directly onto the canvas verso confirm the authorship of Corbet, although they are difficult to compare with his other traced open-air works due to the lack of known Alpine views in the artist’s oeuvre. The, unusual at this stage in landscape painting, technique of oil on paper enhances the fluidity of the artist’s dynamic brushwork in these evidently swiftly executed sketches which depict a small village and a church in lush green valleys surrounded by mountains. The motif of tumultuous clouds engulfing mountain tops especially in the latter work is close to that in the landscape sketch for Frederic Leighton’s David of around 1865 (Leighton House Museum, London).

      • MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE MOUNTAINS OF URBINO FROM PERUGIA
        Oct. 06, 2021

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE MOUNTAINS OF URBINO FROM PERUGIA

        Est: £800 - £1,200

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE MOUNTAINS OF URBINO FROM PERUGIA Inscribed with initials, inscribed on old label verso, oil on canvas (9cm x 40.5cm (3.5in x 15.875in)) Note: Corbet painted this study in September 1881, most likely in the company of Frederic Leighton and Giovanni Costa who both stayed there at the time. The emphatically elongated format of this mountainous view is distinctly ‘Etruscan’ and was evidently influenced by Costa’s teachings. The undulating outline of the foreground hill steeped in lush green is dramatically backdropped by the sfumato-enveloped mountains in the distance, which adds to the impression of aerial perspective. The treatment of the mountains is reminiscent of Leighton’s studies of the Turkish coast of 1867, while the emphatically upward brushwork of the sky which evokes heat vapour is comparable with Leighton’s Egyptian studies of 1868.

      • MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) ENTRANCE TO THE SMALLER TEMPLE AT MEDINET HABOO (SIC)
        Oct. 06, 2021

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) ENTRANCE TO THE SMALLER TEMPLE AT MEDINET HABOO (SIC)

        Est: £800 - £1,200

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) ENTRANCE TO THE SMALLER TEMPLE AT MEDINET HABOO (SIC) Signed with initials, inscribed and dated 'December 1878' verso, oil on canvas laid down on board (18cm x 25.5cm (7in x 10.5in)) Note: This is the only known architectural study painted by Corbet during his voyage up the Nile in the winter of 1878-9, and perhaps entered the collection of Vereker and Lilian Hamilton, Corbet’s fellow students at the Slade, as a token of friendship. As another study produced in the same month and also painted on canvas which was then laid on board, Desert Afternoon (Fondation Custodia, Collection Frits Lugt, Paris), it exemplifies Corbet’s practice of dating his open-air pieces. As his subject the artist unconventionally chose a gateway leading toward the Pavilion of Rameses III at Medinet Habu in Luxor, rather than to the site’s main temple. Having recently stayed with Frederic Leighton in Perugia, Corbet’s style displays his influence in the dynamic, imploding composition with a distant glimpse of the blue sky as well as in the characteristic brushwork which he might have seen in the sketches that Leighton himself painted on the Nile in 1868.

      • MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE NILE AT LUXOR
        Oct. 06, 2021

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE NILE AT LUXOR

        Est: £800 - £1,200

MATTHEW RIDLEY CORBET (BRITISH 1850-1902) THE NILE AT LUXOR Inscribed with intitials, inscribed and dated 1879 on old label verso, oil on canvas (11.5cm x 25.5cm (4.5in x 10in)) Note: This work belongs to a series of studies Corbet painted while sailing up the Nile in the winter of 1878-9 and was perhaps given to Vereker and Lilian Hamilton, fellow students at the Slade. It was painted between 5:30 and 6 pm, which testifies the significance the artist placed on the immediate impression of a landscape. Stylistically, it displays affinity with the views on the Nile that Frederic Leighton painted in 1868, which likely stems from the fact that Corbet had been sketching with Leighton and Giovanni Costa in Perugia only a few months before his trip to Egypt. The study is equally reminiscent, particularly in the bluish hue of the mountains, of the Extensive View of the Nile painted most likely in 1888 by George Howard (Castle Howard, Yorkshire), 9th Earl of Carlisle and a close associate of both Costa and Leighton.
