Multiple exhibition labels verso. Provenance: From the collection of San Francisco architecture critic, art collector, activist and writer Allan Temko. About the artist: Edward Corbett (American 1919-1971) was an American modernist artist born in Chicago, Illinois. Corbett was the son of an US Armed Forces officer and spent some of his youth in the American Southwest, as well as in the Ohio and the Philippines. In 1936 Corbett began art studies at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and studied there until 1941. Corbett himself served in the US Army and was a merchant marine during World War II. Post WWII Corbett spent a year in New York where he joined the American Abstract Artists group. Corbett returned to California in 1946 to teach at San Francisco State College, then at California School of Fine Arts, then at the University of California, Berkeley from 1947 to 1950. Corbett taught at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts from 1953 to 1963, then at the University of California, Santa Barbara, 1967-1968. Corbett later lived in Washington, D.C. Corbett showed his work at many gallery and exhibitions throughout his life including : The 68th Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association, San Francisco Museum of Art in 1949; La Galeria Escondido, Taos, in 1951; Action 1, the Merry-Go-Round Building, Santa Monica Pier in 1955; Grace Borgenicht Gallery, New York, 1954, 1956, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1967, 1968; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis in 1961; and the San Francisco Museum of Art, 1969; and more. Edward Corbett’s works are held by The Oakland Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others.
