Bauxite, colored oxides, acrylic impregnated clay, lead sheet and other sheet metals, as well as a glass bottle imbedded within resin, mounted on carbon steel plinth. Signed on the right thigh, dated 2002 and with the stamp of the artist's workshop. H 148, W 58, D 24 cm (sculpture), W 58, D 30,5 cm (plinth). We encounter a female figure in a confident, determined posture, in ideal proportions and at the same time fragmented like the body of a shop-window mannequin. On the rough, almost coarse surface with its paint residues, grid-like segments open up and reveal an irritating inner life, the geometric lines and structures of a microchip, labyrinthine, abstract and tangled like a maze from a bird's eye view. These openings reveal the body as a technoid hybrid, as a cybernetic organism, programmed by its creator to function, to serve, deprived of free will, objectified and dehumanised. And yet «The Display» seems desirably self-confident, disturbingly beautiful and at the same time, like an ambitious artificial intelligence, ready to take control of its creator at any time. Beschreibung Geb. 1947, lebt und arbeitet in Chico. «The Display». Bauxit, farbige Oxide, Acryl-imprägnierter Ton, Bleiblech und andere Metallbleche, sowie eine Glasflasche in Harz eingebettet, auf Kohlenstoffstahlplinthe montiert. Auf dem rechten Oberschenkel sign., 2002 dat. und mit dem Atelierstempel des Künstlers versehen. H. 148, B. 58, T. 24 cm (Plastik), B. 58, T. 30,5 cm (Plinthe). Eine weibliche Gestalt begegnet uns in selbstsicherer, entschlossener Haltung, in idealen Proportionen und zugleich fragmentiert wie der Körper einer Schaufensterpuppe. Auf der rauen, fast groben Oberfläche mit ihren Farbresten öffnen sich rasterförmige Segmente und geben den Blick frei auf ein irritierendes Innenleben, auf die geometrischen Linien und Strukturen eines Mikrochips, labyrinthartig, abstrakt und verworren wie ein Irrgarten aus der Vogelperspektive. Diese Öffnungen offenbaren den Körper als ein technoides Mischwesen, als einen kybernetischen Organismus, von seinem Schöpfer programmiert, um zu funktionieren, um zu dienen, eines freien Willens beraubt, verdinglicht und entmenschlicht. Und dennoch wirkt «The Display» begehrenswert selbstbewusst, verstörend schön und gleichzeitig, wie eine ambitionierte künstliche Intelligenz, jederzeit bereit die Kontrolle über ihren Erschaffer zu ergreifen. Dan Corbin In the work on offer here, Dan Corbins powerful figurative sculpture manages to seamlessly marry the sensual with the industrial. As Leila Rodriguez writes: Corbins works embody rough textures juxtaposed with soft curves of the female body. Color is often added against the muted earthy tones, and his style dances with a classical approach roughed up by using unusual materials. A constant innovator, Corbin abandoned traditional clay in favor of bauxite, a sedimentary rock composed primarily of aluminum. The switch to this heartier medium gave him the means to build larger, life-size works that could withstand time and wear and support the everyday objects hidden within their surfaces.
