Zancani, "Antonio Cornazzano, le opere a stampa", La Bibliofilía 86 (1984), 1-61, S. 28. - Seltenheit: Besonders selten im Handel nachweisbar. - Seltene Ausgabe des humanistischen Poeten Antonio Cornazzanos (1429-84) volkstümlichem Lehrgedicht in neun Büchern über das Lob militärischer Helden und Tapferkeit. Cornazzanos Traktat war ursprünglich in Prosa verfasst worden. Der Autor widmete den Text Ercole d'Este, an dessen Hof in Ferrara er die Funktion des Hofpoeten bekleidete. - Wie Machiavelli stellte Cornazzano in seinem Traktat die antike und die zeitgenössische Kriegsführung einander gegenüber. Das Werk wurde erstmals 1493 bei Mandello in Venedig gedruckt und stellt nach der Ausgabe von Gerson Soncino (Pesaro, 1507) die zweite postinkunable Ausgabe dar. - Der Titelholzschnitt stammt aus dem Erstdruck von 1493 und zeigt vier Soldaten, die Banner mit der Aufschrift "SPQR" tragen und sich damit dem Dogen von Venedig präsentieren. - Handschriftlicher Besitzervermerk von alter Hand auf der Titelseite.- Bl. K1 fehlt. - Der Schnitt vom Buchbinder stärker beschnitten, Einbandrücken und Buchblock vereinzelt mit Wurmlöchern, einige davon hinterlegt, Hinterdeckel mit Tintenflecken. Die alte Paginierung von Hand vor dem Beschnitt, daher teilweise fehlend, einige Seiten mit Marginalien von alter Hand, mit Paginierungsfehlern in der Sign. :"fii-fiiii/fiiii-fii" und 'niii/niiii'. - Insgesamt solide erhaltenes Rarissimum. No copies currently for sale and only one copy traceable for us at auctions. - Rare edition of Antonio Cornazzano's (1429-84) popular didactic poem in nine books about the praise of military heroes and valor, written in terza rima with linguistic vestiges of the Lombard tongue, which were later removed by the Florence printer Giunta when he published the book "tuscanized" in 1520. Cornazzano's military tract was originally written in prose and dedicated in around 1476 to Ercole d'Este, who also granted the author the post of a poeta at his court in Ferrara. The Piacenza poet humanist Cornazzaro was popular as a pedagogue and teacher for dancing at the Sforza court, cf. Diz. Biog. It. XXIX, 123-31. In present poem he describes proper military deportment and procedure based on classical models. Like Machiavelli, Cornazzano in his tract juxtaposed ancient and contemporary warfare. First printed in 1493 by Mandello in Venice, this is the second post incunable appearance after the Pesaro 1507 edition of Gerson Soncino. - The title illustration is taken from the 1493 first printing and shows four soldiers bearing pennants "SPQR" presenting themselves to the Doge. - Old Owner's handwritten remark on title page. - Leaf K1 missing. Tail edge and fore edge with tight cut for later binding, probably 18th ct., front cover as well as some leaves occasionally with wormy holes, a few of them with old repair, rear cover with ink spots, old hand numbering with ink on upper right of recto leaves before bookbinder's cut, therefore partly missing, some pages with ink annotations, with pagination errors: "fii-fiiii/fiiii-fii" and "niii/niiii". Sehr selten. - Populäres Marienleben in Terzinen, zum ersten Mal 1471 gedruckt. - Der Titelholzschnitt stellt die Wurzel Jesse dar, die Textvignetten zeigen Szenen aus dem Leben von Maria. - Titel verso mit Kritzelei von alter Hand. A2 verso mit handschriftlichem Vermerk am unteren Rand. B6 mit Fehlstelle (mit kleinem Bildverlust recto, Buchstabenverlust verso). Stellenweise sehr schwach wasserrandig, leicht (finger)fleckig und etwas gebräunt. Of great rarity, not traceable to us in trade, Worldcat lists only 2 libraries worldwide for this edition. - With title woodcut and 9 text woodcuts. Very rare. - Popular life of Mary in terza rima, printed for the first time in 1471. - The title woodcut depicts the root of Jesse, the text vignettes show scenes from the life of Mary. - Title verso with scribbling by an old hand. A2 with handwritten note at lower margin on verso. B6 with loss (with small loss of image recto, loss of letters verso). In places very faintly waterstained, slightly (finger)stained and somewhat browned. *
