Corneille was born in Liège, Belgium, although his parents were Dutch and moved back to the Netherlands when he was 12. He studied art at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. He was active within the group from the beginning, not only painting but also publishing poetry in the Cobra magazine. He was a cofounder of the Experimentele Groep in Holland. When he heard during a Cobra Museum visit in the nineties that there was an “Art Lending for Children” he talked with the founder Roby Bellemans and asked him to send more information to his home in Paris about this project. Zum Künstler: Corneille studierte von 1940 bis 1943 an der Reichsakademie der Bildenden Künste. 1946 hatte er seine erste Einzelausstellung in Groningen, 1947 trat er mit Karel Appel und Constant Nieuwenhuys der Künstlerbewegung Reflex bei. Ein Jahr später verließen die drei Künstler die Bewegung und gründeten mit anderen Neo-Expressionisten die Gruppe COBRA. 1950 zog Corneille nach Paris, wo er bis zu seinem Tod lebte und arbeitete. In Paris begann Corneille sich mit Radierungen und Keramik zu beschäftigen. Corneille besaß einen expressiven und schnellen Stil, wenn auch wesentlich feiner als seine Kollegen der COBRA-Gruppe. Mit der Auflösung der Gruppe änderte sich auch seine Technik, die ungestüme Malweise der COBRA-Zeit hatte Corneilles abgelegt. Die Bilder besaßen nun einen ruhigen und klaren Stil. Die einfache Zeichentechnik und die Reduktion der Perspektive und der Schatten behielt der Künstler bei. About the artist: Corneille studied at the Reichsakademie der Bildenden Künste from 1940 to 1943. In 1946 he had his first solo exhibition in Groningen, and in 1947 he joined the Reflex artists' movement with Karel Appel and Constant Nieuwenhuys. A year later, the three artists left the movement and founded the COBRA group with other Neo-Expressionists. In 1950, Corneille moved to Paris, where he lived and worked until his death. In Paris, Corneille began to work with etchings and ceramics. Corneille had an expressive and quick style, albeit much more refined than his colleagues in the COBRA group. With the dissolution of the group, his technique also changed; Corneille had discarded the impetuous painting style of the COBRA period. His pictures now had a calm and clear style. The artist retained the simple drawing technique and the reduction of perspective and shadows.
