attributed to JOHN V. CORNELL (American b. 1813 fl. 1838-1858) A HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL PAINTING, "View of the Hudson Highlands from Ruggles House, Newburg, N.Y.," CIRCA 1840, oil on canvas. 20 3/4" x 29" Note: The present work is a near facsimile of William Bartlett's engraving originally published in American Scenery 1837-1839. The number of boats and the location of the sailboats is the most profound difference when comparing the present painting with the Bartlett engraving. Further, a painting by John V. Cornell (Object no. 1952.95) held by the New York Historical Society is a second example which is also a painting, and of the same subject. The comparison of the original Bartlett engraving to the present artist's choice to remove or rearrange the lake scene is necessary when considering this work. Though obviously derived from the original engraving by Bartlett, the presentation of this painting is slightly altered from the original engraving, refreshing the scene for the astute viewer.  Provenance: Godel & Co. Fine Art, New York, New York. The Estate of Charlotte Brink, Houston, Texas.
