Paul Cornoyer American, (1864 - 1923) The New York Public Library; city street scene oil on board Signed lower left. Biography from Owen Gallery: Best remembered for depictions of New York City, Paul Cornoyer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied painting in Paris under Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant, and Louis Blanc. He based his studio in New York, and his work was aligned with the Ash Can School aesthetic although his work was less gritty than the street scenes of Robert Henri, William Glackens, John Sloan, George Bellows, George Luks, and Everett Shinn. "Approaching New York as Place, cityscape artists [such as Cornoyer] were primarily concerned with representing the city's physical envelope and the impact of its built environment. Scene painters [including Henri, et. al.] on the other hand, were chiefly concerned with urban humanity." Cornoyer died in 1923 in East Gloucester, Massachusetts. Owen Gallery credits "New Century Cityscapes: Or Painting the 'New Metropolis" by Jan Seidler Ramirez in "Culturefront" (winter 1997-98).

    Paul Cornoyer (American/New York, 1864-1923)

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Paul Cornoyer (American/New York, 1864-1923), "A Corner of Gloucester Harbor", 1922, oil on board, signed and dated lower left, titled, "Christie's" label, and typed biography en verso, 8 in. x 10 in., framed . Provenance: Christie's New York, East, "American Paintings and Sculpture", Sep. 29, 1999, lot 138 Note: Paul Cornoyer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where he began studying at the School of Art in 1881. By 1889, Cornoyer had traveled to Paris for further training at the Académie Julien under Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant and Louis Blanc. Impressionism had been well-established in Paris since the preceding decade, and the movement had a profound impact on Cornoyer. He abandoned the Barbizon style of his earlier work in favor of the new aesthetic. Returning to the United States, Cornoyer established a studio in New York upon the advice of William Merritt Chase, who had admired and purchased his work. In the city, Cornoyer's career flourished as he was greatly admired as both a painter and a teacher. The urban scenery and people of New York became his main subjects, and his skillful, impressionistic renderings of reflections on water and snow-covered parks were particularly beautiful and desired. Later in life, Cornoyer spent his summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, seen in the work offered here, where he taught, painted and assisted in forming the North Shore Art Association.
